Over spray

I have a dilemma.

I took on a job of detailing the neighbors car which is going to be up for sale. While it looks incredible, I noticed that it had over spray when I was done. The car got the works, scratch removal, polish, two coats of wax. The only way you can tell it has over spray is if you back side your hand over it and feel it with your finger nails. The terrible deal is that I think it was my mother who is responsible. She was painting 2 bakers style plant racks with aerosol cans without a booth (even painted the pathway a bit), but I was the one who told her it wasn't too windy. I had no idea she was going to go crazy with it, nor did I pay attention to where she was painting them. The most idiotic part was that I should have told her it's too windy regardless of the weather conditions, based on my agenda. I feel responsible in part, but in no way shape or form do I want to do the work in full, again.

I have to tell the neighbor, but I don't think I should tell him how I think it happened. The problem may have to be cured, but it might not. It won't cost him a dime either way. Should I inform my mother? Should she buy the clay bar? Should I say nothing to her? Should she buy the beer for my work party?

Tell the truth and fix the problem . . . or at least fix the problem. Your Mom doesn't have to be a part of it, IMO.

Simple, yes?

Best,

Kurt

edit: P.S.: You're going to get many "interesting" replies to your post, IMO. Popcorn?

Solve the problem and 'suggest' to Mom that a beer supply would be appreciated...

That way you know you have done the right thing...an Mom doesn't know so she can never put her foot in it and the neighbour is also none the wiser, again no gudges can be borne...

Just remember 'a Good deed never goes unpunished' but being able to lokk yourself in the eye every morning cannot be purchsed.. its earnt.

Just had to add one more thing!

If it were me I'd fix the overspray without mentioning it to Mom or the neighbor/car owner.

Best,

Kurt

I agree. There's more to the story. The neighbors are really close with the family, Friday night out to eats, always sharing holiday feasts, the kids grew up together, etc...

If I tell "Bob" that his car has over spray, I'm going to need to paint myself like this guy...

for him to believe I'm responsible. I don't want to look like that guy. I also don't want my mother to lose her painting privileges in the neighborhood. Dad has already banned her from spray painting in the garage. She needs a booth, but to her, that's just more "clutter".

Fixing it is my problem, and I'm sure I will.

I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't have a need for a few greenbacks.

I counted 187 farts that I sucked out of those seats, and at a nickle a fart, I can't buy the new supplies I need.

Matt,
I'd try a small area and see if just repolishing takes it out. May be no need for the clay bar. As far as telling people. I would tell your mother as there are already issue about her painting, @ your father not wanting her spraying in the garage. The neighbor, na, he doesn't need to know. But won't everyone be curious as to why you're doing it again?

There's no getting around that. I haven't seen the neighbor yet, but I'm sure I'll be able to tell him what's up at dinner tomorrow night. He has the car back now, and I'm sure he has no idea it has over spray.

How about "You know, I just wasn't satisfied with the results. Seems like you got some contaminants in/on your paint. Just had to try a little harder."
