"Puppy Mills". This is disturbing.

http://stoppuppymills.org/

If you're looking for a pet, please, please, PLEASE go to a "no kill" shelter and find one looking to be adopted into a good home. Don't go to a "pet store". Here's why (caution: disturbing). Off a veterinary blog. . .

- - - blog excerpt - - -

A reader gave me a heads up on a BIG show today which I am going to
try and watch in between appointments.

Oprah..the Talk Show Guru, will be doing an entire show on Puppy
Mills.

They are ALL over North America, and it is so difficult to know,
whether or not that 'purebred' puppy is from a puppy mill.

These are unethical despicable people breeding dogs for MONEY.

The dogs are generally kept in cages, bred as often as possible
(every 6 months), given little to NO veterinary care, fed as poor
quality food as possible, and housed in pretty unsanitary, unhygenic,
UNACCEPTABLE conditions.

MOST pet stores are getting their breeding stock from Puppy Mills.

Many Web Sites and Classified Adds are really just FRONTS for Puppy
Mills.

When a Breeding dog is sick or no longer fertile, she is often killed-
for these people its all about volume and making $$.

SO WHAT can you do?

There is a very informative site called Stop Puppy Mills- here are
some of their tips:

1. Find a responsible breeder and visit their premises. Responsible
breeders provide a loving and healthy environment for their canine
companions, but don't take their word for it. Never buy a puppy
without seeing where they and their parents are raised and housed
with your own eyes.

2. Don't be fooled by common claims made by pet stores when pushing
their puppies. Despite what they may tell you, pet stores do sell
puppy mill puppies.

3. Don't be swayed by a great website or ad. Just because a website
says great things about their "home raised" or "family raised"
puppies doesn't make it true. Many puppy millers pose as small
family breeders online and in newspaper and magazine ads.

4. Consider adoption. Adopting a dog instead of buying one is the
surest way to strike a blow against puppy mills. To find the perfect
match, you'll want to choose the right one for you and your
lifestyle. Animal shelters have dozens of dogs, many of them
purebreds, just waiting for homes. There are also breed specific
rescue groups for every breed of dog, including "designer" or
"hybrids" like Labradoodles and Puggles.

5. Avoid the temptation to "rescue" a puppy mill puppy by buying
him. Even though your intentions may be good, don't buy a puppy
with the idea that you are "rescuing" him or her. Your "rescue"
opens up space for another poor puppy mill puppy and puts money
into the pockets of the puppy mill. Pet stores won't leave their
cages empty and websites won't leave their pages blank. The money
you spend on your puppy goes right back to the puppy mill operator
and ensures they can continue breeding and treating dogs inhumanely.
If you see someone keeping puppies in poor conditions, alert
your local animal control authorities instead of buying.

Here is the News Release about Oprah's Show today:

THE OPRAH SHOW INVESTIGATES PUPPY MILLS IN A SPECIAL HOUR
DEDICATED TO OPRAH'S BELOVED DOG SOPHIE

Chicago, IL-- On Friday, April 4, The Oprah Show exposes the secret
underworld of puppy mills. The emotional and thought-provoking hour
is dedicated to the memory of Oprah's beloved dog Sophie, who passed
away March 10 at the age of 13. A tribute to Sophie begins the hour,
which then includes an undercover investigation by Oprah Show
correspondent Lisa Ling into the hidden world of puppy mills.

Says Winfrey, "Our show today is for anybody anywhere who loves a
dog, has ever loved a dog or just cares about their basic right to
humane treatment. I'm dedicating this hour to my little Sophie, who
you may have heard died last month." She continues, "Sophie gave me
13 years of unconditional love. She was a true love in my life."

In a revealing hour, Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane
Society of the United States, and Bill Smith, head of Mainline
Animal Rescue in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, issue an urgent
wake-up call to all pet owners about the prevalence of puppy mills.

Then, Ling goes undercover with Smith in Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
for a glimpse into a hidden world where dogs only equal dollar
signs. Ling, a regular contributor to The Oprah Show, said of puppy
mills, "I had no idea how horrific they are. And it's really
haunting...I felt like I was crying two days after I returned because
it's just a really, really scary sight."

Winfrey currently owns three dogs adopted from breeders--13-year-old
Chocolate American cocker spaniel Solomon and two-year-old white
Labrador retrievers Luke and Layla--and says, "I would never, ever
adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a
changed woman after seeing this show."

Yet another reason I'm glad mine randomly walked up to the office and adopted me instead of the other way around. :)

Good to know.

I already know the score with pet store animals, hence have always had strays as pets

My buddy got an uber dog German Shepard. He got on a list and they came to his house before they would talk about selling him a dog

very, very disconcerting.

My brother has a Tree Walking Coonhound. She's a beautiful dog & the howl!!!!!! But that's where she's from, a puppy mill. All she did was make puppies. She was a mess when my brother and his wife got her from a shelter. Was totally afraid of people. She is much better now and has a happy home.

oldE 04-04-2008 12:40 PM

One of ours is a Husky, seized by the SPCA from a puppy mill in another part of the province. The rest were good looking dogs but showed the mannerisms of animals who had no attention. This guy was discovered to be blind (possibly neglect and malnutrition) and we figured we were his best chance. The other 4 dogs taught him how to 'be a dog'. It is great to see him with the other dogs around here (all shelter dogs). He needs to be 'shown' when you move anything, but he will run full-tilt from the barn to the house feeling the edge of the driveway/lawn as he goes. The biggest problem he had was the others getting pi$$ed off at him for running into them. They have learned to make noise as he approaches.

Shelter dogs are great.

Oops, I stand corrected. To think they actually want MONEY for breeding dogs. Sickos!

Not so much that as the conditions to which they are subjected to save a few pennies. I think perhaps the point was that in purchasing puppy mill dogs, you are subsidizing abuse. I hope you are joking, as the cartoon would indicate.

If you are not joking, you might want to consider pulling your head out of your ass and looking around a bit.

baldman 04-04-2008 01:10 PM

Or if you want a purebreed dog go to a breed rescue! We volunteer with Bulldog Rescue in San Diego and we constantly have pure bred bulldogs that you would pay upwards of 2K for, our adoptions fees are MUCH lower than that. The only thing wrong with most of the dogs we have is that their owners didn't want them anymore.

Who gets to decide what is and what is not abuse? Is this story believable? If they do hope to sell these dogs and breed more, the conditions for these dogs must be optimal for a going concern, other wise they would be unable to breed and sell, thus forcing themselves out of business.

It is possible to irresponsibly breed, which leads to unwanted characteristics in a breed, but this is also a sign of a short lived breeder, because who wants a neurotic lab. The problem, if it is a problem, is self correcting. Concerning yourself over it means you've got too much time on your hands, or your priorities are out of wack.

So far I have not seen a problem, if it is so obvious one only needs to remove his head from his ass, then you shouldn't have a problem answering those questions.

oldE 04-04-2008 02:11 PM

72doug2,2S,

The story is all too believable. The no-kill shelter at which my wife and I sometimes volunteer gets a lot of complaints about puppy mills. The laws are in place, but the courts don't want to waste a lot of their time banning cruel avaricious people from posessing animals. Dogs tied to trees for their whole lives, *****es constantly kept pregnant, minimal care until they have a buyer and a fabricated record of innoculation.

The sad truth is people buy these disasters because they either think they're 'getting a deal' or they pretend to believe the BS.

If these bastards knew the law would treat them exactly the way they treated their dogs, there might be some changes.

There are laws in place, they are not adequately enforced. The story is believable and all too commonly repeated. The dogs only have to live long enough for the check to clear, you just start selling them to another store after you wear out your welcome. Behavior problems take some time to manifest themselves. This "self-correcting" you mention is unlikely to happen, and certainly would not happen very quickly.

You don't see a problem because you failed to pull your head out of your ass. Pretty impressive that you can type so well with a terminal case of cranial anal insertion good for you.

I pity you more than I can express in words.

+1

Pet stores should also be responsible for ensuring their animals didn't come from puppy mills.
