The Pool is open!!

Perfect Sunday...

Woke up at 8 to watch the F1 race on Tivo while it was recording skipping the commercials. Great race and almost caught up to to the recording by the end of the race, no commercials.

Taught my son how to do a brake job on my RX7:

He just bought a E30 from RickV and we will be going to town on it with maintenance. Since I had to do a brake pad change and bleed I figured he could learn a little something.

Then I mowed the lawn and vacuumed the pool, when I reached in the pool to hook up the vacuum I was surprised to feel the water was warmer than expected. I checked the temp and it was 86°. :D

I finished up the vacuum job and jumped in. The 4 y/o was quick to jump in too.

Italian Sausage and peppers on the grill some Bahamian Kalik beer and it was a good day.

Jim:

Cool! First spring-like weekend here- mowed the lawn, stuff like that. Still running the FJ though- not really targa weather quite yet!

Cheers,

Paul.

DUK 04-06-2008 02:57 PM

Jim, where's the picture of the grill going full tilt?

BTW it was a whopping 60 here today and breezy and cold. (Did I mention it was cold)

Jims5543 04-06-2008 03:12 PM

Duke,

We were there last week, I was surprised how chilly it was I hope it gets better for the weekend.

Although highs in the 60's will be good to me since I do not have a/c. ;)

See you in a few days.

MRM 04-06-2008 04:06 PM

Yeah, it was like summer here too. It was so warm we had rain instead of snow with temps fully above freezing with precipitation all day for the first time since about last November. At this rate the ice on my lake will be melted by, oh, early May, and we can get the boat and dock in before Mother's day.

URY914 04-06-2008 04:14 PM

Jim, have you son wear some shoes next time he uses a ball peen hammer.

Safety First.

Jims5543 04-06-2008 04:19 PM

Paul.

RX7 front brakes are probably the easiest to change. I use the claw on the hammer to spread the pistons out before we yank the old pads out all the way. Then the new pads slide in real easy. Then its 2 small rods and a retaining clip an the job is done, I can change out the front pads in about 30 seconds on that car.

So the hammer was used to spread the pads not hammer on anything.

I was barefoot too. ;)

Got the son an e30, very cool. I know all the ins and outs of those bad boys. If you have any questions let me know.

URY914 04-06-2008 04:34 PM

So you never dropped a hammer on your toe?

I point out a obvious safety concern and I get blown off. OK, forget it.

Sure,

Any tricks or tips for removing the windshield wiper motor?

This one appears to be done:

I am so impressed with this car I am considering replacing my Audi with a E30 as well.

**the more I thought about this I just have to say wow!!**

I was not blowing off your "safety concern" I just do not see it as such a concern as you do.

He could have easily dropped ANYTHING in the house on his toe with the same result.

edit

LOL! Yeah I have and it hurt, and from then on your careful. He needs to learn too.

I have also dropped a beer can on my toe should I wear steel toed boots when I drink? :D

I was more mad at myself for not breaking out the jack stands because I was lazy.

Without looking to see where you live, I knew you live in FL when I saw the cage around your pool.

Brother used to live there...

Does FL require a full cage around the pool? Holy smokes...good thing they don't have state tax! or do they? I can't remember now...nevermind...go back to what you were doing...

URY914 04-07-2008 04:27 PM

Florida law doesn't require a full cage but the Florida bugs do.

red-beard 04-07-2008 05:34 PM

What is your water temp, and are you heating in anyway?

JeremyD 04-07-2008 05:37 PM

ours is 78 degrees right now - no cage. and no heating -

red-beard 04-07-2008 05:43 PM

We hit 79 today in the water. I have a gas heater, but it cost $$$ to run. The only thing I'm doing is using a pool cover. I'm hoping to get it to 80 by this time next week. I have friends from Upstate NY coming, and 80 degree water is beautiful!

Not to feel bad. I was thinking the very same thing. Wait until something silly happen and they both loose toes in an accident then they might remember this post.

So when I hang a picture for my wife I better don steel tipped boots?

Please guys, it was a brake job not a tranny swap.

They require the yard to be fenced in or the pool to either be screened or fenced in.

Jim,

Sounds very nice, wish I could say the same for the weekend.
Not sure if you've been checking the extended forecast, but it changes day to day.
Hoping for the best, looking forward to seeing all for Spring Break! SmileWavy

Headed down to Pat's the following weekend to lend a hand planting the vineyard, too bad he couldn't make it up for the weekend.

Thanks again to RickV for the find & Jim for the transport. ;)

Your welcome Jay! It was the least I could do.

I have been checking the weather and I am hoping for the best. Nothing else you can do.

Yup, we have been slowly changing out the screening to the smaller holed screen that keeps out no see ums. For the 1st time in the 11 years I have lived int his house we are having problems with them. We are close to the ocean and the inter coastal waterway and for whatever reason we hardly have any mosquito's or any other pest like flying bugs. I am sort of perplexed by the no see ums this year.

Air temp that day was 85° and the water temp was 86° I used solar panels to heat and normally put a solar blanket on the pool as well when not in use, except the blanket is shot and I need to get another. If I had the blanket on the temps would be up in the 90's if I wanted them there. We try to keep the pool at 85-88.

Joeaksa 04-08-2008 04:41 AM

Never mind... but pls remember this when something happens.

I am more pissed off at myself for not using jack stands, I even told my son, from now on whenever a car is jacked up the stands need to be under it.

I guess maybe if we were wearing tennis shoes it might be safer for our toes and if we were doing anything more than a brake job, which I do so much for track days with this car I can do with my eyes closed, we would be donning foot apparel.

So you win.

Dittos here. Wrenching barefoot is not a good idea. (edit) Neither is frying bacon in the nude.

911Rob 04-08-2008 03:09 PM

OK, that post made me laugh!

You're living the good life Jimbo!! Very nice, congrats.
I can see it'll be tough giving up the cabin?

Jims5543 04-08-2008 04:24 PM

Good life? I did not get a paycheck for the entire month of March, good thing I have socked a bunch of money away when times were good we have been living off of savings for the last 6 weeks. :(

I keep hoping business picks up or I am closing down the business at the end of this year and going back to a 2 person company, then I will not have time anymore to go anywhere.

Terry - I missed part of your post before, Mike, my son bought the E30 not me, I made it VERY clear to him a couple of years ago that I do not believe in buying my kids cars, they need to buy themselves their cars and work their way up so they can appreciate what it takes to get nice stuff. Nothing is getting handed to him, I did tell him I would match his savings dollar for dollar for his 1st car only, in this instance he paid $500 for this car (again, a huge thanks to RickV) and I have put another $500 into the car in parts to make it road worthy and safe.

From this point on he is responsible for keeping it on the road, I will offer my knowledge for him to learn how to repair it and keep it maintained but he will be responsible for financing.

He also does not get a free ride at daddies company he needs to find a job for himself and work at it although he seems to have found a nice gig doing what he loves and it looks like he might make a good living at it if he applies himself, then he will never work a day in his life.

I could tell you stories would make your hair turn white. For example, a full 55 gal drum will snip your toes off neat as you please if you set it on your foot, this works with safety shoes if you do it right.

Even if you don't drop something, there is a bunch of stuff on your garage floor you don't want to step in, even one as clean as yours. I have pulled a lot of things out of the bottom of people's feet, metal shavings, glass, needles, pencils, thorns, toothpicks.

You only really need a helmet if you crash your motorcycle, and then it is too late
