NCAA Finals
Good game but don't these kids have some requirement to speak English in order to get into college. Guess they expect a free ride in the NBA because they certainly can't speak the English language.
"When we was on the line, we was trying to make them," Rose said. "But I guess we didn't do it." WTF!!!!???? That is such a sad commentary on our world today. Does one speak this way intentionally? Help me understand this. |

Yep its sad......
I bet the NBA teams offer classes on how to endorse the paycheck or fill out a direct deposit form. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$

I hope you are kidding about "Does one speak this way intentionally?"
To your question, I was at undergraduate school in Memphis when "Penny" Hardaway was there (l was on track scholarship, so lived in the athletic dorm)...Penny was a really nice guy and a great player, but he had the "worst sounding" dialect you can imagine...he was from a really really rough part of town, and that is just the way people there talked, plain and simple....most people that weren't from a rough area really couldn't understand a word he said....BUT, he went high in the draft and about 3 months later, i saw an interview on TV...i couldn't believe it was the same person talking, he sounded quite normal, whatever that is...it was remarkable, i just sat there and stared....obviously with his pro team and $$$$, he went to a speach therapist, to be more marketable... Anyhow, i'm not defending the way Rose talked per se, but you've got to understand, your accent and dialect come from your enviorment mostly - your friends, family, people you spend the most time with, etc. I myself have a heavy southern accent, and to some not from the south, it can sound "unintelligent" at times. Rose is actually from Chicago btw....

I appreciate your reply. I have traveled many places and while I understand the issue of dialect (having worked for a French Canadian company for 30 years), the way he speaks, in my mind is not dialect but what I was taught as poor English.
Perhaps my issue is more with the educational system than with him. These guys are great players, they will be role models very soon, if not already. I just hope they are positive role models when they realize that life is more than just making millions. |

Rose is a stud...he took over that game late in the second half, and is the only reason Memphis had a shot in the end (but then he and CDR couldn't shoot free throws). Rose is probably one of the better sounding guys to come out of the CPL (chicago public league).
