Question for milt or anyone who could help
I came across a device at a new client's home (old Spanish build in the 20) in Pasadena. It is a about 1 foot dia. and and has cast iron lid that lifts from the ground near the back of the house. Its about 20" deep. what is this thing use for? I am thinking that its t trash incinerator? Anyone? I have seen them before, but not having an answer for them was pretty bad. I am thinking someone here should know.

Doggy septic tank. Seriously. The newer ones are plastic with a wide base like a space capsule. The older ones were metal and a simple cylinder.

It's probably an old cistern

Yep. You bury it, add some enzymes, toss in poo and let nature take its course. I'm not sure this is what you have, but the dimensions sound correct for an old one.
You can find the more recent incarnation here: http://www.doggiedooley.com/ I'm not recommending them. I considered getting one because it sounded easier, but I heard from a couple of people that they stink. |
I was thinking that I am getting my chain yanked again here. The doggie dooley sounds like its it. I am going to suggest that the owner clean it up and chill his wine in there for the back yard pinic.
