Finished Re-Reading Dune

It was 17 years ago the last time I read this book (12 years old). I don't think I really grasped the themes and the below-the-surface events back then.

But one thing really bothers me. There is one paragraph in the book that mentions Paul Atreides "other" sister:

Quote:

For some reason, he recalled his younger sister, her elfin face so clear in his mind. But she was dead now--in a pleasure house for Harkonen troops. She had loved pansies..or was it daisies? He couldn't remember. It bothered him that he couldn't remember.
Now, this is very early on in the novel (page 37), before the Atreides move to Arrakis and before Alia is born--or even conceived. I've been trying to figure out if this a prescient vision of a future that never occurs, or it is a reference to another sister. If the case is the latter, that sister is never mentioned again in any of the six original books.

There is a another book you should read. I have just started it actually. It's called "The Road to Dune." Basically its a bunch of work that was the basis for "Dune." Call it a first draft.

I haven't seen mention of another sister yet. Some of the characters are different. Paul isn't Paul, he's Barri and Duke Leto is Jesse Linkam. Anyway, the reference in "Dune" to another sister might be a left over from the first drafts or it could be foreshadowing. I didn't think Paul began to have visions until he got to Arrakis, but I could be wrong.

Gawd I wanted a piece of "the lady Jessica" sooooooooooo bad..........classy broad.

I read all 5, or was it six books?

Never read this series. Haven't really read Sci-fi since my 20s. Worth a read?

They are very complex so they are a slow read, but they are fantastic. I don't usually read Sci Fi, so if I liked them anyone who likes adventure books or politics should like them. They aren't hard to understand, it's just hard to keep all the people straight. Dune was the best. The rest were of varying interest to me. I haven't read them for years, either, but I've been thinking about them with us in Iraq and the Feydayeen attacking us daily.

+1

I found myself re-reading certain paragraphs multiple times. Not because I didn't understand the words, but because it was sometimes important to note the exact wording of a sentence. Often there was much that wasn't being explicitely said.

One of the things I never picked up on when I read the book at 12 was that Baron Harkonen was a pedophile.

I LOVED Dune.

I LIKED Dune Messiah.

After that, it was all downhill IMHO. I ceased caring about the characters, got bored with the politics, and simply ground my way through them because I felt I should.

Just MHO.

After Dune Messiah, it was like 'The Godfather, Part III".

Movie sucked.

The movie did suck. However the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries was even worse. Absolute low-budget dreck.
