That's what I find so fascinating about cults: there is a built in response for any dissenters or criticizers of the cult. They have their own language and a twisted way of rationalizing the oddest beliefs.
"it's not religious, it's spiritual" HUH? It states "God" more times in the 12 steps than in the ten commandments. Find on youtube how many references to "God" there are in the "big book". Then they hold hands and recite the our father prayer at the end of every meeting...... hello?!! And it is in the book book to proselytize and recruit family members - after all anyone can benefit from the 12 step religion, right? If you ever get a chance talk to folks, whether from AA, Quixstar (amway), scientology, etc.. folks that have deprogrammed from their respective cults, do so. You can garner an insight into the insidious indoctrination process - which is remarkably similar in most cults. Hmmm it is "free" - maybe we should all join - first lets drink the cool-aid . . . I quit booze 25 years ago with the help of the people at AA. I won't say anything bad about them. What you need to do to get sober is your own program. Having the tools to do so is like having a big tool box that you can choose from. Some people have to go to meetings every day to stay that way. I saw that as giving up one crutch for another and it was not going to be the way I wanted to be. I just wanted to stay sober. Once I realized that that was the key, wanting to stay sober, I moved on. I play bars all the time and I am constantly reminded of it's foolishness. No cult or committee on earth can keep you sober if you don't want to be that way. I really don't like recovering people that put there program on others by forcing them to be sober if they choose not to be that way. They need to stick to their own issues and deal with that. Anybody who has been in the program will tell you that romantic involvement is one way to get drunk again. I would let her get a bit more time in before seeing her anymore.

I read your post to my wife and she says your lady friend needs an al-anon meeting.
Of course this is assuming you don't have a drinking problem which you don't state in your original post.

Actually there isn't anyone that "needs" any AA meeting. . . but I digress.

AA meetings at my end of town are great for getting banged..
Being how there's about 8-10 bars, depends, within 1/4 mi of here it's almost like just another local group dynamic that has some credibility. Everybody's cool about AA.
