Found an interesting website....
...which kind of puts a damper on the big oil making too much profit theory....
http://www.marylandgasprices.com/tax_info.aspx I had no idea state taxes were this high. |
Looks like most states have a flat tax on gas. I am sure they wish they had gone to a percentage tax with prices as high as they are today.

Seriously, when "big oil" is profitable anyone who holds shares makes some money too, from Wall Street to most folks with a 401K. The congressional hearings where the politicians grill the oil co. execs always struck me as the ultimate expression of hypocrisy. Best, Kurt |
IIRC, in IL we have stickers on the pumps that shows the tax rate on the fuel.

They charge us exise taxes, which are a fixed amount, and then they charge us up to 8% around here on the total amount, INCLUDING THE EXCISE TAXES! We pay sales tax on excise tax. I filled up this morning and paid around $3.60 a gallon. Of that, about 29 cents went to sales tax and around 38 centsd went ot exise tax. That's almost 67 cents a gallon for taxes. Yet they tell us our roads and infrastructure are falling apart. Maybe the asshat politicians should spend the revenue on what it was intended for, taking care of the roads and such. It would be much easier for them to do that if every snivelling low-life special interest group on the planet would stop walking around with their hands out asking the politicians to spend that money on them instead of on the roads. |
