You're fortunate. I just finished replacing a power steering line. What a PITA.

I'll tell you what the real problem is with with new Porsches:

When I strap my Rolex collection to those fancy rims, it makes the braking twitchy.

LOL! But it is a good way to keep the watches wound....

I know a guy breaking into "the industry" (show-biz for the non-So-Cal folk).

So, he was looking for a car commensurate with his station in life. His choices boiled down to either an Escalade or a 996. He picked the 996, a Tiptronic, no less. Now he's shopping for a set of "dubs", chrome, natch.

Accessory? You decide.

Counter-point - There were plenty of water-cooled Porsches (Boxters, Caymans {Caymen?}, 996/997s, including some Gt2/3 cars and one Carrera GT) at the most recent PCA Orange Coast Region auto-cross, many of them quite well driven. All is not lost.;)

Went to the race track this past weekend. Guy with an RS4 and another with a Murcellago (sp)
were giving rides to hot chicks inbetween races. These two nuts were vitrtually racing there cars around the road course. the Lambo would walk the Audi on the straight and the Audi would catch and pass in the twisty bits. It was a hoot to watch.
two Turbo Porsches sat in the lot all day and never put a tire to race track.

some of you guys are easily as bad as the "tools" you complain about. How in the world does it affect your car if someone bought a new Porsche because it was "pretty"? Sounds rather elitist to me.

Any p-car is an accessory. Even if it is your passion you don't need it. You choose to engage it and it speaks to you. But to criticize others because they don't "get it" smacks of bitterness imho.

And btw in POC the most competitive classes now are Boxster Spec and Cup cars. But then again, those guys are just poseurs...

Really? I see the F430 as vulgar. Like a fat man in a g-string at the beach, it screams 'look at me,' but it's out of place and kind of pointless on the modern road.

And I do love cars, including other Ferraris. For me, nothing much of interest after Enzo died, though. 550 being an exception, as an understated GT that is a joy to drive.

Yeah, the first thing that comes to mind is a fat man in a g string - on the beach:rolleyes:

And that horrible sound...

Also, some people love cars but don't really know that much about them. My dad is a good example of that. Owned an MGTD, a VW convertible... really loves nice cars but I don't think he's ever changed oil himself once.

He loves his 86 Carrera cab - I mean LOVES it - but he has no real attachment to the marque. He wouldn't know a longhood from a SC from a 964. Heck, when he asked me to help him car-shop last year, he wanted to get a Solara convertible. Glad I talked some sense into him.

Either way, just because he isn't well versed in Porsche trivia doesn't mean he isn't worthy. He puts more miles on his car than most of the purists here. I think he put 15k on it last summer.

onewhippedpuppy 04-15-2008 12:16 PM

I don't care if the F430 is styled to look like a Kia, I'd drive the damn thing just for the SOUND. Pure automotive euphoria.

Perhaps we're wrong to criticize those who care nothing for the glorious history of Porsche. But who isn't a little incensed when a licensed driver brings a car in for service and refers to it as the red one, but doesn't know the make, model, or year? IMO This is the same thing just a few steps beyond.

You say elitist like it's a bad thing. I've never considered Porsche for the masses, nor have I ever seen a Porsche ad targeting the dead common.

Yes, I'd say we're a bit elitist. Not in terms of posh spending habits, but we are elitist in a "cognoscente" way for our appreciation of fine autos.

Who isn't a little enamored by Grady Clay's knowledge of all things Porsche?

Who here would say, "A 356, what's that?" Even my 7 year-old knows what a 356, 550, and 914 is and he's never seen any of them in his life.

svandamme 04-15-2008 02:17 PM

i beg to differ, my Porsche is not my accessory, i'm it's accessory.

In fact, it won't even leave home without me, just cause i'm so damned good looking and it wants to be seen with me
It get's to share some jelly out of my donut, to be in my parade, to bask in the glory of my thunder...
All those things, i, out of the goodness in my heart, i do share.
I've got to much thunder anyway, 't would be a crime to not share it

And that's how the cookie crumbles.

As the old saying goes, "Everyone is entitled to their opinion. No matter how pig-headed and ****ing stupid it might be..." ;)

An F430 is more like an olympic athlete just out for a stroll on a public street. Ferraris are the highest form of automotive art, a major step above any production Porsche. If a car, or any man-made object could be too beautiful, it would be the F430.

Thanks for proving my point with your vulgar statement.SmileWavy

I respect the marque, and it's racing history, but the 430 street cars are too 'over the top' in their styling these days. I would be genuinely embarrassed to be seen in one, unless it were a challenge/race car at the track.

JCF 04-16-2008 03:07 AM

Agreed, differing tastes in style are to be expected. Not everyone thinks or should think the same things are beautiful.

I should have said "if you can't APPRECIATE the F430..." for what it is above and beyond your personal vision of what a car should look like or what roads YOU would use it on; If you can't see that - then I defer to Speeder.

And Paul, the company has changed - to keep up with the times only.
It's "soul" has not.
You are stuck in the past along with those who thought Porsche sold out when they made the 911.

;)

Then there are people with Rembrandt and Picasso in a vault, without even any interest in the actual art.

If I had the money, I would probably own a new Ferrari - just because its a Ferrari and its a cool car to own, drive and be seen in.

Well, I donīt have the money so I will have to do with a vintage, low budget, Porsche and 'live the legend'. :D

You know what Livi...If I had the money...My car would be a 1989 930 Targa...
And the stable would certainly contain a 550 and a 356 and a 914-6...You said AIR COOLED hey...!:)

I love cars, and I think the Ferrari 360 is one of the most beautiful ones ever made, but I wouldn't own a Ferrari no matter my finances. The Italians have no respect for build quality and they don't engineer cars to be maintained sensibly. I could see myself in a Gallardo, though.

Back on topic, I had a similar Porsche experience a while back. I told a young guy he had a nice 993, and he looked puzzled for a moment and said "It's a '95."

You could be right John...that's why I'm keeping this one on my list of "maybe" cars. I refuse to pay the 20-30K above sticker that dealers are demanding tho.
Maybe next year, once the hype slows...others on the short list? Infinity G-37,
4 door jeep, Nissan's new skyline...or, logic says nothing. Basic transport needs are met, after all. Porsche is off the list. Cindy is still mad at me for selling the old '72...she'd shoot me if I bought another.

Here's an F-car I consider downright gorgeous.

As a friend who has an F-car as well as a Mercedes said: "If I am going to buy water cooled, I'm going to buy a car that was always water cooled." This friend's final Porsche was a '98 C2S...when I met him, decades ago, he had a '73 RS lightweight...
