computer virus help... home computer
I caught somthing that Trendmicro and adaware doesn't fix. I tried to use task manager to help locate a name or something but it says that task manager has been disabled by the HP_administrator. How do I get this turned back on? any tips besided paying more than I care or throwing the box in a river?

How old is the computer? If running Windows XP or Vista, just reset the computer to a previous date prior to the virus infection.

Kurt, the computer is a couple years old running XP media.

einreb, I'll follow your suggestion, though I'm a bit computer illiterate.

you may want to consider picking up a usb hard drive and copying over important files 'just in case'

also, maybe take a look at your windows/system32 folder and sort by date modified and see if there are any suspicious .dll files there (i.e. created recently). google the file names and see if it identifies the offending virus.

those free help forums are 'hit or miss' you can often identify the problem and find a matching one thats been solved and follow the instructions. im not a pc support guy, but do a lot of software work and i find this difficult to deal with. you are not alone.

I saw your hijack log...

looks suspicious. no results on a search for 'ddcDvutT'.

I ran the hijack just for kicks and then went to the forum. Holy moly, what a complex deal!

It reminded me to run my Spybot program and that speeded things up!




I use Avast as per recommendations found here. I've had no problems other than a few cookies.

BTW, I also have Lavasoft, but I guess they terminated their free program. It seemed to be more thorough than Spybot. Any thoughts?

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but this is sort of parallel.

I saw that one too. Doen't looks like it want to be deleted or at least gets recreated.

I'll give the site a few days to see what happens. In the mean time I'll see if I can borrow and drive from someone.
