Porsches are just an accessory

Started a big refurb today.

The client, a nice guy, had a beautiful late model 996 targa.

I said to him " Is that your 996?". He looks at me totally confused and said "No, I've got a 911!"

Hmm, I just smiled and said as a total joke "Us air cooled guys dont call the watercooled ones 911's"

He said "Whats an aircooled 911?"

All this guy wanted was an accessory. Maybe its just me, but I lost a bit of respect for the Porsche brand today.

A friend of mine is buying a 997 Turbo. He had a difficult time deciding between the Porsche, a M3 and an Aston. Went with the Poschh as it looked cooler...

Pretty annoying to feel that those with the money lack the 'correct' form of appreciation and passion. Us that do have it - lack the money..

You're right; don't blame the brand, it's the guy who bought an accessory. Lots of people are drawn to the Porsche marque for it's inherent "status", "impression" whatever you want to call it, that it carries. Many new owners fall into this category, and if it weren't for them, we wouldn't as many of their discarded items from which to select.

I've told this story before but I feel it's worth repeating in this thread. My 9yr old son and I saw a 996 and I asked what was different w/that Porsche. "It's not air cooled". Cool.

I'll wager the next owner understands. These kind of people wouldn't touch a "used" car.

Don't forget that the majority of people who owned the cars we now drive when they were brand new had this same attitude. It's this attitude that's kept Porsche afloat for half a century.

Most of the "new owners" could care less about water cooled, air cooled, etc. They just want to be seen in the newest and coolest they can afford. I dont knock the guy, he is just uninformed about the history. But to him, its a Porsche.

Well at least kids can see real Porsche race cars again. Those kids are watching giant killers, and they are going to have some respect for the brand.

Dream cars. You know, for kids.

Before I sold the DB4, I was on a Sunday drive with the wifey. We stopped at the Malibu Seafood (I think it's called) just north of Pepperdine University. A guy in a new DB9 parked a few spaces from me and as he walked by my car said "Nice car, what is it?)

OTOH, when I bought the 84 Targa, I was at a gas station filling it and a guy complemented me and cause it didn't have tags said something about how nice it must be to drive a brand new Poorch. That was when it was already 20 years old. I took THAT as a sort of uninformed compliment. But the Aston one, I mean come on!

Maybe this is why Porsche tries to sell Cayenne SUV's by showing pics of former glory????

I, for one, welcome our depreciation eating, new Porsche buying, gold chain wearing overlords.

I'll wait for the crumbs to fall from the table. I wonder what a 10 year old 997 Turbo will cost.....

I sense irony and I agree. Two ways of looking at it. As with everything. There are people with an enormous sense and passion for art that will never have the means to hang a famous painter on the wall. Then there are people with Rembrandt and Picasso in a vault, without even any interest in the actual art.

If I had the money, I would probably own a new Ferrari - just because its a Ferrari and its a cool car to own, drive and be seen in.

Well, I donīt have the money so I will have to do with a vintage, low budget, Porsche and 'live the legend'.

I usually get the "nice porshhh(sometimes 'a')". At the gas station the other weekend, the guy in front of me looks back and adds "is that a '92", I say proudly, "no, actually, it is a '84".

Do you think all those rich Dentists and doctors bought these cars in the mid '80s because of the "legacy", or the "provenance?" The History? C'mon.

Hey! My dad was a lawyer and he owned a nice '68 912 before the '84. Maybe lawyers are the exception?? Nah!!!
