Computer setting got messed up - can't open attchmts any more. Why?

On a PC, Windows XP.

Somehow some setting got messed up. I used to be able to just click on an attachment (like a doc attached to an e-mail) and it would automatically open up.

Now it doesn't seem to automatically find the right program to open it. When I go to open it, it asks me to save it. If I save it, when I try to open it, it will ask me what program to use. Sometimes it will say it is a "macro enabled" document, whatever that means. Sometimes I can find the right program to open it, other times not.

How can I get it back to normal?!?

(I know I have given a crappy description of the problem!)

Also, when I go to My Documents, and look at a regular text document, it used to be described as a "WordPerfect 12" document. I could click on the icon and it would open right up.

Now that same document is described as a "Microsoft Office Word 97" document. When I click to open it, a "Save As" prompt box opens up.

Same thing just happened to me after I uninstalled Mozilla (POS) Firefox. Help!

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Open 'Folder Options', select the 'File Types' tab and find the extension for (example) .DOC - Word Documents and see what is opening it. If it is not Word, you can change this.

Macros are embedded into some Excell and Word files, but the person that created the file would have set the macros up.

jeez, all my extensions say (NONE). I can hardly ever look at a video w/o saving it except you tube.

Not to hijack this thread but how do you save a you tube video?

You need to get a third party extension for Firefox (like DownloadHelper) or you can find the .flv file in the temp cache dir. You still need to get a third party .flv player, but there are a number of free ones.

Awesome, that fixed it! Thanks!

Mine said that, too. Do what slodave said.

You're welcome. :)

Along the same vein, if you are trying to open a file you can do it then as well.

Right click on the "start" button and open Explorer. Once that opens if you have any file you want to open but its not working you then right click on it and scroll down to the "open with >" and click on it. Go to the bottom and click on the "choose program" selection. Select the program you want to use and click on the "always use this program" box...

From that time on it will always open with that program.
