Dad going in for throat surgery

Having dinner with mom, dad, and my brothers family last night and dad announces to me that he is going in for throat surgery this morning and the doc thinks it is cancer. No one seemed too upset and they say he will be out of the hospital in five days so I am hoping it is not too bad.

Dad is in his 80's and the tough old ba$terd acted like he is going in for a haircut.

My sister in law, a lady friend from church, and I offered to move in with mom for the five days but she is refusing... we will all be checking in on her regularly anyway.

Being the designated wuss of the family I'm doing the best I can to hold myself together.

Any prayers or well wishes will be appreciated.

Note: He started smoking when in the air force but quit when he started a family some sixty years ago.

Those tough old guys generally do well. He acts like it is no big deal to keep your mother and the rest of you from worrying too much.

Good luck, keep a close eye on your Mom, make sure she is eating and sleeping like she should.

Try and do your crying when she is not around, it will make it harder for her I would say.

Hope everything works out ok for your dad. My dad had a similar situation with esophageal cancer, but his had progressed beyond surgury at that point unfortunately.

He has medical insurance so he gets checked up pretty regular, he has had acid reflux for as long as I can remember so maybe that contributed to the problem?

I'm not crying much yet... only if I start dwelling on the what ifs... that is why I came in to work today to keep busy. Not much I can do today anyway, they said they were going to put him in ICU for the first day to keep an eye on him.

Thanks for all your kind replies.

Thanks again for all the prayers and good wishes,

Everything worked out better than expected, it wasn't as bad as they thought, didn't have to cut out as much as they thought, expected recovery in weeks instead of months, once he is healed up no special diet will be required.

Thanks so much for the good thoughts.

Now if I can just figure out how to keep him from working on the roof.

On a side note I was wrong, mom and dad didn't just celebrate their 60th anniversary.. it was their 62nd.
