Recordable device playable on car radio
 

I am NOT savvy to the electronic gizmos available... My wife was accepted to medical school at the University of Alabama. She will be starting at the end of July and has expressed an interest in obtaining a device that she can use to record lectures which can then be replayed through the audio system in her car. I am not sure if such a component exists. Please, no responses as to what anyone thinks about her approach - just information regarding the medium in which she can record and replay this information. Any assistance will be very much appreciated.

It depends on the stereo in the car. Does it have a 1/8" line in jack? If so, then just about any cheap personal recorder will do - most if not all will have headphone jack, so you just need either an adaptor or a male-to-male 1/8" cable. If there's no line in jack on the car stereo, you're a bit more limited. You can get a recorder and then buy an FM broadcaster, but that's going to be more expensive. There are also portable CD recorders available, so you can record and burn direct to CD, then play the CD back in the car.

If CD player only then you will need some sort of FM transmitter.

I guess another option would be a set of portable self powered iPod/mp3 speakers.

there are also solid state devices that will do this - even some with USB storage - you'd need a USB capable "radio" tho - that means one that is pretty new

I think she should NOT record the lectures. If they are too fast, then she should get together with the other students and compare notes. As a former prof. of physiology - that is about the last class that an audio recording can help with. I say this recognizing the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Dread) of your 1st year med. student. Tell her not to worry too much -- if she can just deal with the psychological problems, she should be fine. They are unlikely to have admitted her, if the thought she had a poor chance of making it.

Now being an MD these days with HMOs running everything... that may turn out to be the real problem.
