Ever driven on the beach?

First time for me. Very cool. Pismo Beach, CA. I think the last remaining place in California to allow vehicles on the sand.

The reason we were there - My son and I rented some quads for the day!

Years ago in Daytona Beach, FL. Don't know if they still allow it.

I'd only ever do it with a rental though (salt=rust).

Race Point at Provincetown. Used to get a yearly permit, drive out and have a hundred yards of beach all to ourselves. They allow self contained campers on certain sections. The drive from the the road to the beach was a trail through the dunes, usually with a steep climb for the last section.

I remember when I was a kid fishing the Outer Banks of NC, you could drive for miles in either direction and likely not see anyone at all. Even when I was a teenager, it was legal during the off season at Myrtle...I remember having "jeep races" during HS beach trips. When I lived in Fl. we'd drive on the beaches in St. Augustine and Daytona, but don't think it's legal in St. A anymore. Daytona wasn't really "driving on the beach", it was more like "finding a parking spot at the mall during Christmas" on the beach :).

No I havn't driven on the beach, but with the way things are going in the world today I am afraid of winding up on the beach.

gprsh924 04-21-2008 03:26 PM

Not on the beach, but many times in sand while offroading. My friend once got stuck in sand up to his frame, that was a 2.5 hour job to get him out, made worse by the fact that he was also up against a tree.

Normy 04-21-2008 03:30 PM

They still allow driving on the beach in Daytona Beach. Some sections are closed off, though.

In my youth we'd drive on Galveston, Boliver Island, Port Aransas, and Freeport. Not allowed in to many places anymore, but I'd rather go to Crystal Beach on Boliver Island where can drive on the beach than go to Galveston.

Many years ago, my then girlfriend threatened to take the keys from me after a dozen or so consecutive donut's in a rental car :D

We rented a sand tired golf cart on Daytona beach when our son was just a wee pup. It was funny driving past the stuck cars in a golf cart :)

KFC911 04-21-2008 03:40 PM

I've seen more than a few cars get stuck in the sand over the years, including buddies' during our jeep races...not a problem if there's someone there to pull you out. I've also seen a few get stuck with no help around...tides don't wait for anyone :(.

mattdavis11 04-21-2008 03:55 PM

A few buddies and I went on a fishing trip years ago and drove down the beach. We entered at Corpus Christi TX and ran to the Mansfield Channel. We fished, got drunk and partied all over Baffin Bay for 3 days. It's a 60 mile run from Corpus. I had a boat in tow, and hit huge piece of drift wood on the way down. Had to make on-beach repairs to the trailer. Fun times.

ckissick 04-21-2008 04:07 PM

I used to take my old Baja Bug to Pismo, let most of the air out of the tires, and go crazy on the dunes. Nothing like a wave of sand going over the top of the car when you land. Fun stuff.

David 04-21-2008 04:07 PM

I've only gotten stuck once. There weren't many passing trucks but luckily I found a piece of plywood and got out.

I've been a passenger and been stuck a few times, it's certainly easy enough to do.

There's just something cool about driving along with the ocean just right there.

I'll tell ya from the old salts on the USS Scorpion that the last place in the world ya wana be is stuck on the beach in Melbourne.

It may be still legal at Cannon Beach, Oregon. A former Governor, Oswald West, had the legislature declare all beaches public highways. A state land grab, really...but it did keep beaches from being fenced off.

I would like to add that driving on a beach is akin to driving on winter roads that salt has been used on...but it's your rig, do your own thing....

Grew up driving on the beach in Padre Island.

Just make sure you wash off all the sand and salt when you get home... Rust never sleeps!

. . . snip . . .

I drove on the beach in Galveston in high school, early 80s - IIRC, it was near Pirate's Beach.

That was cool . . .

Drank a lot of beer there, too.

Best,

Kurt

that is why you wash the undercarriage afterward.I have driven on the beach in 3 states, OR, CA and Texas

williecoyote 04-22-2008 07:36 AM

I have driven on the beach here at the Outer Banks many times. There is nothing like just cruising out to the inlet, and having lunch while watching the birds, and boats, and smelling the salt air.

Twenty years ago, you only saw fishermen on the beach. If you saw a female in a bathing suit, everybody stared.

Now that everyone has an SUV, it's all families enjoying the sun. Much too risky to cast a hook into the water for fear of hooking someone.

As we speak, the government is trying to close our beaches to motor vehicles.

daepp 04-22-2008 07:38 AM

It amazes me the the kommiczars of the CA Coastal Commission even allow this stretch to stay open.

DaveE 04-22-2008 07:52 AM

I did at Daytona in a rental, just because that's what I had. I flew down for business; didn't drive my car down.

onewhippedpuppy 04-22-2008 08:12 AM

A buddy of mine managed to bury his Cherokee up to the axles on a beach at a nearby lake. He called a group of us to rescue him. Being Friday night and in high school, we were good and drunk. We arrived at the lake just in time to meet the nice police officer that was giving them all MIPs. I should have made my friend pay me back for mine.:D

BeyGon 04-22-2008 08:48 AM

I have driven on the beach in Daytona, got my 4x4 stuck up to it's neck in soft sand at Pismo, got a Diahatsu stuck to it's doors on a beach in Costa Rica, Playa Negro and Witches Rock, but the Diahatsu was easy to get out, the 4x4 took awhile.

biosurfer1 04-22-2008 09:16 AM

That is right next to my families beach house:)

There is a bar just up the street called Mongo's that has $.50 tacos monday nights!

I seem to remeber driving on the beach in Oregon... I thought it was Gold beach but maybe it was Cannon?

There is a reason they have so many DIY car washes in Pismo. ;)

That's sad :(. I remember the Outer Banks from the 60s when it was VERY remote, and took real effort to get there...you wouldn't see a single person, and if you did, it was someone fishing. I went back about 10 years ago (after Labor Day, so offseason), and was so disgusted with "the development" that I'll likely never go back. I see folks driving around with OBX stickers on their SUVs and cringe...they don't realize that paradise has been replaced with "progress", and it's never coming back. Once they built the bridges (replacing the ferrys) and opened up the easy access to folks from VA/DC, it was inevitiable imo...

Sometimes things just go by U Boyz....anybody here familar with Nevile Shutes novel, "On the Beach" or the movie by the same name starring Greg Peck....about a post nuclear war world.

daepp 04-22-2008 09:42 AM

I read it - kinda different. Yet another in a long line of post-apocalyptic novels. It did have a racing tie-in IIRC.

Wow, no kidding Scott. There is one just to the right of Grand ave when you drive out off the beach and on any weekend, there is a line around the corner for that place. The owner must be laughing all the way to the bank:eek:

BeyGon 04-22-2008 10:01 AM

I read the book and liked it then saw the movie, as usual, the book was better.

Drago 04-22-2008 10:17 AM

I've driven for miles out at Long Beach, WA. Unfortunately it was in the wife's Expedition, but it was a nice break from family time during a reunion.

The pint of Vodka might have also helped the experience. ;)

Scooter 04-22-2008 10:20 AM

I used to live in San Luis Obispo, so driving on Pismo was a regular event for us. Good times!

911Rob 04-22-2008 10:21 AM

Long Beach, Tofino, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

Very close to a sign that says you're at the most Westerly point of Canada.
;)

madmmac 04-22-2008 10:23 AM

Stay away from the water. I have seen more than a couple of cars making their way back to Japan due the driver venturing too close.
