Look what the vermin have done

I watched several Boy Scouts erect this as part of an Eagle project on Thursday. It was a nice map of the trails on Mt. Rubidoux - he even went to the trouble to use a router to create the trails on the map. By Monday it was defaced. This park/trail/mountain area has been visited by the public for 80 years. Donated to the city by a local humanitarian and the Union Pacific/Huntington. Over the years many brass (bronze?) plaques have been placed to recognize various people/events. Now they are being pried loose for their scrap value. Some of them were works of art. This one was stolen and has been replaced with a simple stone inscription http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208880550.jpg Replacement - already grafittied http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208898907.jpg Original http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208880783.jpg This is what's left: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208880705.jpg They are ruining what little niceness there is in this area. Is it a lack of punishment? Is it a lack of parenting? A lack of fear of diving retribution?[ |

The city sent a crew up last month install missing nuts from this bridge. They had to tack-weld them on due to theft.

Pathetic, isn't it? How is this easier than a job for these scumbags?

Incredible.
This past weekend a neighbor had a garage sale. What they didn't sell, they just placed on the curb for bulk garbage pickup. They left a bunch of electronics, keyboards and an old monitor. A couple drove up, woman got out of the car and proceeded to cut off ALL the cables with wire cutters, I assume to get the copper from the wires. Amazing to go through that effort for $1 worth of copper. I wish the scrap yards would be more accountable for what they "recycle" or at least have a conscience and report seemingly valuable stuff to the police. |
Sad...

Last year I was at the scrapyard one day and two young guys had several milk crates of copper wire -HEAVY duty stuff- that they were trying to unload. "where did it come from?" "Um, some guy sold it to us for $20" yeah right But those plaques... somewhere along the way, they are being bought by someone who knows what they are, and knows better. The scrap dealer that buys them is just as guilty of public mischief/vandalism as the guys who pried them off. |
I thought this was going to be a Thread about the Democrats.

I was visiting Natural Bridge a few weeks ago.
The place was full of vandals look what this guy did!!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...3/CIMG3306.jpg |

My son is an Eagle Scout and he built a bridge over a large stream on a hiking trail as his projeect. He came home the other day very upset and I asked what was bothering him. He and his girlfriend went hiking and he discovered that vandals had destroyed the bridge. I can't understand how these people do this kind of stuff. Does it give them a thrill or what??? It's truely sad.

People today value nothing other than consumption.
Not property, not life, not other peoples' time, nothing. Only consumption. Humans in large crowds/populations are at their stupidest/worst. One reason we need a good plague to wipe out about 90% of the human population. Then we'd be about right where we should be. |
I can't understand that kind of vandalism either. I will admit that I did a lot of stupid stuff in high school. I still do actually. But everything we did and do has an element of humor to it. Like placing the lighted reindeer in people put in their yard at christmas into sex positions. Its funny. But simply destroying or defacing things, thats just lame.
Here is my favorite: Here is my favorite sign. But first a little background. On more than one occaison, my friends and I attempted to eat at Steak and Shake but were refused service because only 2 of the 4 of us were actually going to order something, the other guys were not hungry and simply wanted water. This is at like 10-11pm and there are literally 2 tables occupied at the whole restaurant. They have the policy because people used to go in there and hang out forever and never order any food, but I thought refusing 2 of 4 paying customers when the restaurant is basically empty was asinine. That was two summers ago...we made sure that the employees had a lot of extra work to do that summer. They had an advertisement on their sign for "New Bits & Pieces". We made sure that they had to change that sign back at least once a week for almost the entire summer, sometimes striking multiple times a night...we were never caught. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f2...1321/steak.jpg |
There is a huge BMW / Benz / Land Rover dealer back home. Apparently some guy decided it was worth it to head out there with a Sawzall and cut the catalytic converter off of ~200 brand new BMW and Benz cars. Sold them for $$$scrap$$$$ money.

Atlas Shrugged is unfortunately turning out to be stunningly prophetic.
So many of the things uttered by Clinton and Obama (and even McCain), for instance, are almost right out of the mouths of the protagonists in the book. And stealing of nuts, bolts, wires, etc. from bridges and other public places, to sell for scrap, is right out of the story, as the nation slides into decline. |

Boy Scouts with guns
Perhaps the Scouts should repair the sign and wait for the little sh:ts to come back to tag. A couple of Scouts with 30-06s up on the hill could try for merit badges in wildlife management. Culling the herd to breed out the bad ones isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Some states have fixed the theft problem by making it a felony (for over $500 I believe) and making everyone who brings in stuff for recycling leave a thumb print. But I guess most police organizations are too busy writing tickets and making drug busts to stop theft.

Being a city dweller I must say by personal experience this vandalism is really getting out of hand...
Better parenting would help but unfortunately too many parents are either unavailable or stupid self absorbed children themselves (or both). I honestly don't know what the answer is... oh sure we can beat our chest and talk about vigilante justice but that makes up no better than the vandals. Ideally it would be more cost effective (and humane) to instill a sense of community, pride, and respect into our young children... but how do you do that? And the adults are not doing any better, can't tell you how many times I have seen a mother or father toss several bags of fast food trash out the window of the family mini van stuffed with children when there is a garbage can a few feet away. |
It's an epidemic. In El Aye, they're stealing bronze statues out of parks and the copper wires in the street light boxes. I have a friend with an auto shop on San Fernando Road in Glendale, CA who has had his window screens stolen several times for the aluminum frames. He eventually gave up replacing them.

They were taking it with them, and I asked what they were doing. One said, oh, my father owns this business and asked me to bring this home. I knew she was lying, because the place belongs to a church. I said, fine, lets go see your father right now. They start getting nervous, and told me to leave them alone. I refused, and suggested we call the police, they ran. I should have put my dog on them. |

Railroad bridge stolen in Czech Republic Police say they're trying to figure out who made off with a 4-ton railroad bridge in the Czech Republic. The iron span disappeared between Dec. 5 and Jan. 11, according to the Czech News Agency. "We are not sure if it was taken for personal use or for its scrap value," police spokeswoman Martina Hruskova tells AFP. "It is the first time we have dealt with this type of theft." ========================= Russian steel bridge stolen for scrap * Published: 08 January 2008 11:25 A steel 11.5m long road bridge was stolen in Khabarovsk, Russia's Far East, local officials said on Saturday. The bridge was made of four steel pipes half a metre in diameter and covered with steel plates. It is likely that the thieves stole the bridge to sell it for scrap. It is reported that the thieves worked at night when there was no-one around, which enabled them to dismantle and remove the heavy construction. Local workers arrived at the bridge on Saturday morning to discover that the only direct route to a thermal power station had disappeared. "The total loss sustained to the bridge-owner by the theft is estimated at 400,000 rubles (£8,290). However, repair works will cost the energy company over a million rubles (£20,730)," a spokesman told Russian press. The spokesperson added that the new bridge will be made of reinforced concrete, instead of steel and repair works will take at least a month. It is not the first time a bridge has been stolen. A 5-metre span metal bridge disappeared from a river crossing in the Ryazan region, east of Moscow, Russia in August 2007 and a 10 tonne, 115 year old steel railway bridge disappeared from Howard Springs, 35 kilometres south of Darwin, Australia ni November 2004 |
I've heard of huge bundles of phone line being stolen. Active phone line cut from between 2 poles. It's a real shame that extreme stupidity or lack of respect can't be punished via capital punishment.
