I'm no herpetologist, so I don't know anything about the species of snake, but chances are good that the snake had a venom that paralyzed the frog or possibly the frog was dead/dying.

Besides, frogs don't really have any defenses, other than jumping away which is much harder to do with only the one rear leg

toads usually excrete a bitter milky substance from their skin to repel attackers. maybe be was empty.
