Hawaii 5-0 as a philosophical model

Last night I had a vision and set tivo to grab Hawaii 5-0 episodes. Lo and behold, the first one popped up today. Episode 21 it turns out (http://www.mjq.net/fiveo/5-0log1.htm):

After Julian Scott, a peace protester is shot during an anti-war demonstration, McGarrett meets with his friends. One of the demonstrators says coming to McGarrett's office makes her "sick". He lays on a heavy speech bringing up the names of JFK, RFK, Martin Luther King and Gandhi, saying "I abhor violence in any form.... I'm a peace officer ... euphemism? But I maybe want peace more than anything else in the world."

I wish the scripts were online. McGarrett's monologues are epic works of art.

Book 'em Danno

I always admired his one-shot shooting skills. And his black Mercurys.

I loved the big oversteering Merc's. I like how the shot of the car was taken down at ground level.

Kam Fong as "Chin Ho" was an underrated guy on the show. The theme song (I think it was the Ventures) was one of my favorites, right up there with the cool bass line from "Barney Miller".

Zulu as Kono was always the way I pictured Clark in the Tom Clancy novels. Dunno why, but that's how I pictured him.

Anyone remember the Ms. America pageant from the late 70's when the girl played the drums to the song from HI 5-0? I was about five or six when I saw that.

Wo Fat!

The epsiode with Slim Pickens and his family of hillbilly grifters roaming the islands was the absolute zenith of the series.

Completely untouchable in its weirdness.

I remember one when they are interviewing someone and the say "He was wearing a shirt with the name Dave on it."

McGarrett turns to Danno and says "Call headquarters and have them put in the computer the name "Dave" and find out who they all are."

Wow the power of 1970 computer technology.

He shoulda shot Julian Scott too.

LOL, I actually played Hawaii 5-0 with the ventures once. Nokie wasn't there but Bob Beadle was.

Damn Sammy, that sure does bring back a lot of memories. I still have that playing. I would be willing to bet, that a lot of us that have adult children(25-35yrs old) the kids would not have a clue about this music. Thanks! Tony.

Oh Haha 04-25-2008 03:07 PM

I played the HI5-0 theme on my drums in the 3rd grade talent show.

No other music, just me humming the song in my head, banging away.

Man, that must have rocked for the audience.

McGarrett had great hair.
