The truth is only an illusion.

cashflyer 04-26-2008 06:12 AM

Did you just watch I, Mudd???

(In your best Bill Clinton voice):
Define the word "is".

A flute without holes, is not a flute. A donut without a hole, is a Danish.

Or perhaps "The Changeling"?

For reference http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68734.html

I thought about Nomad, but I found it more fitting to reference I, Mudd since the title of the thread is basically a line from the Liars Paradox that was used on Norman.

It sounds like Kurt has traded relativism or absolutes.

kstar 04-27-2008 08:56 AM

From cashflyer's link - my emphasis added:

Quote:

These statements are paradoxical because there is no way to assign them a consistent truth value. Consider that if "This statement is false" is true, then what it says is the case; but what it says is that it is false, hence it is false. On the other hand, if it is false, then what it says is not the case; thus, since it says that it is false, it must be true.
Absolutely! :D

Best,

Kurt

P.S.: It's always interesting to see what threads die and which ones go a few pages or more.

That's true (or false).

It's usually pretty predictable from the beginning which ones will have legs. Keep at it, young jedi.

"This statement is false" seems to me to not really be a paradox. Instead, it is just a non-sensical, undefined declaration. The trick is that it IS a gramatically correct sentence. i.e., it is correct in language "form." But it is incomplete/nonsensical in substance and content.

Statement: "I am an inveterate liar. I am incapable of telling the truth"

Question: is the above statement true or false?
