Keep in mind Ovechkin plays for the Caps, and DC is no sports town
![]() I really think any sports fan that doesn't watch the NHL playoffs is missing out on the best sports have to offer. There is no other championship that is played with the same level of intensity and excitement. I went to the 6th game of the Flyers, Caps series. I've never been to a sporting event with that much energy to it. I thought the building was going to fall down when the Flyers scored. The Eagles, Giants playoff game in '06 wasn't even in the same league, and the Eagles won that game. Plus hockey players are multi-talented. How many people here that golf can say they hit a hole-in-one their first time ever playing the game?

Caps? Never heard of them. Or is that referring to the street corner vendors that sell "I heart DC" and "FBI" logo t-shirts and ballcaps all around the tourist areas here?

Yeah, live Hockey is an event. Even when you are a lowly Islanders fan.
My F In law was a season ticket holder during the Islanders Stanley Cup years. My little 5'1" wife got to go to the games as a kid and became a rabid hockey fan. Going to games with her is scary. I huddle in a corner comforting the kids while Mrs. Hyde roots for her team.

They are talking about the Sonics leaving Seattle. Looks like its a done deal.
Good. Their new owners are *********s. Let them go and lets get a national hockey team in here. I grew up in Detroit, and the Red Wings home games......wow. Intense, with huge fan involvement.

Yeah, there's NOTHING that matches a Red Wings playoff game at the Joe! I used to have season tickets a few years back.
Hockey is, and always will be, a niche sport. What can you do when 95% of the population has never played the game and doesn't really understand the rules? They should implement a rule that no NHL team can be located in a city that doesn't have natural outdoor ice! Hockey in Phoenix, LA, Nashville, Florida, Tampa Bay, et al ![]() Give me a freakin' break

Anyone who thinks that Hockey is easy doesn't know hockey. Just remember the famous Gordie Howe hat-trick:
A Goal, An Assist, and A FIGHT!

Hockey Rules,.. even in ATL... I'm the VP of the local mens league and it's huge. There are 5 rinks just on the North side of town and we have over 4,500 registered players in 7 leagues all with several divisions. (and yes i grew up in NY and we had 5 rinks within 5 miles of my house, but thats not the point)!
Granted i can tell you our league grows every year simply from the influx of transplants moving here, but now all their kids are playing too, so its a self feeding mechanism. Hockey in the south is alive and well! http://www.atlantahockey.org here is one of me playing in Philips arena after a Thrashers - Penguins game. and one of me and my son after he/we (im the coach) won this years bantam championship. ![]() ![]()

Yep hockey is great! Got a gold medal from the IPWG, a bummed knee, bad hip, bent knuckles but I love it.
In what other sport can you drop the gloves, square off, trade punches and drink beer afterwards with the guys on the other team with no hard feelings? Plus at 5'10" and 170lbs (and leading the team in penalty mins) I ate more punches than I landed..... all good fun!!! Cheers

Hockey is unfortunately the team sports equivalent of road racing to racing. It requires the most talent and energy, yet gets the least respect.
