recession and relationships

I have noticed that a lot of my friends are having tough times with relationships these days. Breakups, separations, couples not getting along, what is going on? Has anyone else seem this trend with people that you care about?

Yes... but I'm not sure it has to do with the recession... more with modern societies obsession with entitlement, unrealistic expectation (in relationships), and people being egotistically self centered.

But I'm not bitter

Look at our parents and how hard they worked at getting along.

you're friends... likely depressed because they had invested so much hate into GW. the war in the M.E. global warming..."why can't it just all fall apart like we wanted, man?"

PS. what recession? ... we had growth last quarter

yeah, I guess you have a point there, but I don't really think that my friends think that much about Bush. Mostly they are just trying to survive and live peaceful lives.

Maybe it is the age of these people, 25-35, maybe this generation has a tendency towards more individual, personal happiness, opposed to the family unit, that our parents did.

50% divorce rate means every second house you go by, they are breaking up.

Probably one of the BIGGEST challenges that we are faced with as parents today..... teaching our kids about proper relationship values. We've taken the "traditional" concepts of relationship building...... many of our friends come to us for advise, but its the foundation of the relationship that carries the heavy weight of years gone by.

Good Luck, get yourself a bunch of Gary Smalley books and hand them to your friends.

I've noticed that allot of people use the word "recession" as if we were in a recession. We are not.
Recession is an economic word with a specific definition.
The sensationalist media has brainwashed the general public and convinced them they we are in a recession and that simply is not true. They do it for ratings. Please don't believe most of what they tell you.
We may end up in a recession but it hasn't happened yet and can't for at least 5 months from now.

We are in May 2008.

If the numbers for the current quarter of April/May/June 2008 turn out to be negative, and the number for the quarter of July/August/Sept. 2008 also turn out to be negative, then history will show that we were in a recession in May 2008 (i.e., right now).

("Recession" doesn't really have a specific definition, but IMO the most commonly used/accepted one is 2 conseq. quarters of negative GDP growth).

Also, when I see discussions of it on the various financial type programs, it seems some think our current quarter will come in negative, but others think it won't. But no one thinks the numbers are going to be very strong.

Not quite true. The divorce rate factors every divorce, while many people have multiple divorces. My wife's uncle just got married for the fourth time. He alone accounts for three divorces, so three of the houses next to me are statistically doing okay.

And let us not forget the houses you drive by where single people live.

It's 50% of all marriages, not 50% of first marriages. Big difference!

#1 contributor to domestic trouble is money problems. I would be more surprised if the recession did not lead to relationship problems.

My parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next January.

remember too that what are reported right after the end of the quarter are estimates - they are typically revised and at .6 percent growth - not a whole lot of margin for error
