What to look for in an XR70?

I am trying to join the 'new bike' club and am looking at a couple of XR's for my kids to run around the yard on. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/651166758.html is one that I am looking at.

Anyone know of specifics I should be looking at?

Or for a couple hundred more I can get an '01. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/662172618.html Is there much of a difference besides the plastic bits?

buy one from some kid who dumped wads of goodies into and has to sell because he got a whopper of a speeding ticket or knocked up his girlfriend. sounds like how to buy a porsche huh?

since its a basic 4 stroke engine , look at plug, listen for valve noise, look at oil. look at seals on shifter and kick starter for leakage. check bottom of case for jb weld if kid cased it on a rock somewhere in its life.

buy a skid plate saves lots of headaches later.

pretty hard to screw them up.

A XR70 is a XR70 is a XR70.....age does not matter and they all are yard bikes not race bikes, so most are in pretty good shape.

Thanks Tim, that is exactly what I thought and what I am looking for.

A quick search under "Honda pit bike" will most likely point you to all kinds silly mods available for these bikes ;)

I am thinking of the XR70 as a stepping stone to the CRF80/100/150. (You get the idea). Then we can really start to do some trail rides and have some fun.
