Why my son went to the AX with me...

He is trying to setup a photography service where he sells pics from events. He has been just practicing right now. This event was difficult because it was SCCA and everywhere he went he was chased away due to "safety reasons" although the one place he was chased from was next to the front door of the building containing the bathroom.

Considering the difficulty he was challenged with I thought he did a good job. The guy with the 280Z saw what we were doing and bought a CD on the spot for $10. His first sale.

His pictures were also used in last months Goldcoast PCA magazine in the AX update column. He was pretty proud of that.

I saw a photogrpher killed at a a/x because he was standing where he was told not to.

Nice shots.

Nice shots. Suggest a filter of some sort to avoid the white/wash out of the tarmac (err...unless that is a white surface they're driving on).

Sweet Z.

Same son that knows the true meaning of rich?

You've done a good job, you have every right to be proud of him.

A long lens and a tripod will allow him to get the shots. Is there an RV/SUV roof or something similar he can set-up on?

280Z is a great shot, beautiful car!

Jims5543 05-06-2008 12:50 PM

The 280Z is an interesting car, it was in a huge wreck, and was totaled. He cut the entire front clip off and put a tube frame chasis on. Then dropped a 5.0 SVT cobra motor in it. All the fabrications, all the body work and paint was done by him.

He is a hell of a cool guy and not afraid to drive it.

Paul he was using a decent zoom lens and staying pretty far away for affect it was just far away was not far enough.

Danny, he is just starting out and suggestions are more than welcome if there is a specific filter your thinking of please tell.

He is going to be an apprentice with a pro in a couple of weeks and hopefully can learn a lot from him.

I keep drilling in his head, "Do what you love and never work a day in your life".

He likes this a lot.

His still photography is really good too, his photography teacher told me he has a natural eye and he better pursue this.

OH BTW - IF anyone is into web design and can help us (for a fee of course) set up a website where he can sell photo's from, chime in!!

Id1ot, this includes you, I have tried to contact you a couple of times with no success.

That Z pwns.

I do web design, but I am up to my arse in work. If things calm down soon and you still need someone I will see what I can do.

I'm not sure of the type (polarizing perhaps?), but there are many available which can change the look of a photo. You can make the sky look blue/clear on an overcast day and diminish reflections from the ground/water/glass.

Jims5543 05-06-2008 01:03 PM

I want to do something like this.

http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/thumbpage.aspx?e=3758494

Poking around photoreflect right now this might be what I am looking for.

This looks good now all I need to do is set up a webpage to embed this into and sell from here.

He might try a polarization filter, but that will slow his shots down a tad. It's worth a shot, but they are also $100 filters, so it'd not be cheap to try and find out it didn't work like he expected.

Yep, exactly. If you've ever had polarized sunglasses, it's pretty much the same thing.

That doesn't surprise me, I've been dabbling in autocrossing photos as well and it's really easy to loose perspective of where you're at vs. the cars. I run with an independent club and have instituted a policy where if you want to take photos from anywhere other than the designated spectator area, you must have a spotter. It's worked well for us so far.

That Camero looks like it just DNFed. Great pics. I especially like how he got the cone and the 280 in perfect focus.

Jim, If you're back in NC I don't think Winston is too bad of a drive for you, and we're a pretty photographer friendly club.

KFC911 05-07-2008 04:20 AM

That's pretty cool for you son to be getting into :)! Tim, where in W-S do you guys run...is there a link or something? Thanks!

Tim Walsh 05-07-2008 04:26 AM

www.auto-x.com or for a schedule: http://www.auto-x.com/schedule.php

mostly we're around the LJVM coliseum area, but we also have them at the danville airport and at the Greensboro coliseum(if they'd call us back)

KFC911 05-07-2008 04:28 AM

Thanks Tim!

Years ago we had a guy at our DE who took pictures all weekend, had a nice setup where you could purchase prints on the spot, any size or get just the CD for $25.00 I got the CD which had about 50 great pictures of my car, no one has ever done this again, I don't know why,

I think its a great idea, I always take my camera but never take any pictures, just no time..

Don Plumley 05-07-2008 05:32 AM

Nice shots. For the website, you want people to be able to see their pics after the event and place an order. For example, check out http://www.gotbluemilk.com/ This guy is a regular at NorCal events. On site, he has a trailer with about 8 big iMacs (and Air Con) so people can browse the pictures he takes at the event. After so many years, he seems to have a set pattern of corners and pictures, the composition is really well done. Here's his last snap of my car at Thunderhill:

don't see any pics of athe RX7, guess maybe he was in the car eh?
