Pool pump took a dump?

I am not sure what is going on.

The pump stopped pumping and is making a loud humming sound, sort of like a big short.

I cut the breaker and opened the back up to expose the center shaft and checked it, it spins freely.

I am thinking the motor is burned up.

Yes?

Probably. Look into getting it rebuilt, also look at the new pumps which are much more efficient. I got a $100 rebate from Edison a few years ago when I bought an energy star rated one on their approved list. You might have a similar program in Florida.

Either a capacitor or motor is kaput.

My bet's the capacitor...

Try a cap. If its humming but spins, those are the odds.
