excellent opportunity. working for my professor paid the way through grad school.

most grad students have never turned a wrench. keep us informed on the project and maybe some of us can offer advice.

Legion's prediction:

The success of this project leads directly to Speedy getting a big-bucks offer from a large engine manufacturer.

I'm going to be sad when Speedy moves. :( But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and he would be a fool to turn it down.

I've met Speedy a few times, and the man is a case study in the balance of common sense, skill, drive, and knowledge. He will go places.

I don't think Speedy came here just for high fives - there were already plenty of people cheering. Telling someone to be careful is hopefully helpful and not just negative. I have seen plenty of 7 - 8 year grad school "careers" with professors that exploit their students. Look at the average time to graduate before signing on with a professor.

This applies all over the world - nothing to do with SF.

Cheers, George

My College use Dynamics (2nd 1/2, Sophmore year) to weed people out. The professor they used was Brutal! After some exams, he'd hand out a quarter to some kid and say "Call your mama. Tell her you're not going to be an engineer."

(Minor thread hi-jack) Similar experience, but started in advanced physics class. My (crazy fit) prof dies (really) on his bike (heart attack) 3 weeks from the end of the class. The sub is a guy who got his PhD when he was 20 or so. First day he says "This stuff is easy. You can read the rest of the book for the final. Let's talk about some interesting problems for the rest of the quarter." Whoa! Had to take Thermo from the same guy. Actually interesting to be in touch with that much brain power, even though couldn't really keep up with his thoughts.

And George is right. Make sure the indentured servitude isn't expected to last 10 yrs.

are you a grad student or undergrad? If grad, terminal masters or phd?

Aigel is right to ask a few questions. It likely is a great opportunity but the devil is in the details. I saw people have problems when they "joined" the "wrong" group. Each situation is different. Hell, I almost left Caltech after spending about 6 months in a group that made me miserable. Switched groups and all was well.

Way cool...perhaps we'll get a functioning e-ram afterall! ;)

There is a functional "e-ram" type device. It just isn't a little bilge pump plastic thing. Basically, it is only good for a "boost" for short shots, like nitrous. The alternator needs to recharge a bank of batteries between shots.

And it doesn't cost $99. It's about $1700. But based on the charts of boost pressure vs. engine speed, I can see it will really work.

I am doing my undergrad right now. Who knows maybe grad school if all goes well.

He asked me to think about how many hours I am willing to work. He knows I have a family and commute 1 hour each way to school. I see him as being a down to earth guy and there is evidence he knows the importance of family.

I take my first final tomorrow.

Speedy:)

Go for it. Very little downside if you're an undergrad and a whole lot of upside. Just don't bang his daughter or kill anyone. Not that I know anything about that...

red-beard 05-11-2008 04:39 AM

What's wrong with banging his daughter? Well, assuming she is of age, etc....

aigel 05-11-2008 12:26 PM

Sounds great. You are an undergrad and this is a paying job - it beats delivering pizza! ;) Very little down side to this. On the upside, working in a group may help you decide if you want to continue on after undergrad or not.
