Garmin guys, question on the Nuvi.

I have the Nuvi 350 for a year or so (love it btw) and I have occasionally run into the situation where a highway it wants me on is closed. So when I intentionally miss the on-ramp it just keeps recalculating a way to get me to the next on-ramp (to the highway that's closed). Is there a way to tell it the damn road is inaccessible?

In those circumstances, I usually just turn it off so I don't have to hear that (seemingly PO'd) female voice nagging away at me.

I have the same Nuvi and haven't run into that situation. It sometimes starts me in the wrong area and I have to do an off/on.

lendaddy, if you know about these closed routes ahead of time, try plugging in waypoints (intermediate locations) that force the GPS to take you on a route that bypasses them.

edit: I wonder if the Nuvi has a detour functionality. I need to check my owner's manual.

I have that GPS too and what you descibed is the least of my problems with it. I view a GPS sort of like a parachute - if it's not 100% reliable, it's 0% reliable.

Do you update your software? You should at least every month for the latest road information.

Nagging? My uncle is very happy with his GPS. He explains that a pleasant (and presumably attractive) female voice tells him which way to go. When he screws up following her directions, she simply says, "Recalculating..." in a non-judgemental tone. That is opposed to some other female voice yelling at him, "I TOLD YOU TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY, YOU %#(@*#$!"

Use the British English voice, not the American English. She's MUCH nicer.....

City Navigator version 2009 recently came out (within the past month) Garmin updates their maps once a year. It costs you to update whatever you have on your Garmin GPS(like $60, used to be free). If you bought a GPS a month ago with the old map software, too bad for you. It makes a lot of sense to buy right when the new maps come out as they will be out of date eventually. That may be why they cost less around thanksgiving/christmas as they are 1/2 way out of date by then. GPS's that are listed as no longer supported do not come with the latest map and you could be buying an out of date map and not even know it, and have to shell out $60 for an update immediately.

I have bought 2 Garmins and loved them. I am not sure if I am buying another Garmin as I don't care for the current marketing scheme. TomTom? Magellan?
