Any leads for cheap "good" garage speakers?

I'm wanting to expand my stereo system out in my 3000 square foot shop. This is just my garage stereo, so I don't need high end audiofile quality speakers. Thats what the Sunfire and Carver gear in the house is for. I do like good accurate sound, not just base thump and muddy mids or shrill tweets.

I'm also looking at buying about 8-10 speakers, so I'm not wanting to spend a whole lot either, I'm thinking between $100-150 a speaker so that's still around a grand $$$.

I've got 3 attached bays, about 1000 square foot each. I figure to spread the speakers out in most the corners.

Circuit City has some Cheap MTX band/dj style monitors for only $119 each. 12" woofer and a horn tweeter Solid rugged box with handles to hang on the walls.

Great for sound reinforcement I figure - here's the link:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=179405&c=1

Anyone in the audio biz that has something similar or better for about the same price, or suggestions and weblinks?

There is cheap cheap crap on Ebay, but no thanks.

I'll be powering them with some Carver amps rated at 120 watts a channel. Best thing I ever did was throw a 300 disk sony CD changer out in the shop so it can play all day long in shuffle mod and you don't have to listen to radio commercials every 7 minutes.

Party on.

I am listening to these at my desk and they are very nice... maybe too nice for a garage.
JBL Control 5... these are listed at $480 a pair... if you shop around a little you might fine a better price.
I didn't pay for these... they were in an exhibit that got removed and I... uh... I'm keeping an eye on them so they don't get damaged... yeah, that's the ticket.

Are all the bays open to each other with a tall ceiling, could you but a pair of very large pair of vintage PA speakers (Altec's, EV's, etc.) and hang them from the rafters?

Pawn shops typically have the same kind of crap garage sale speakers (over priced too) that I presently have out in my shop now. 6-8-10 years old, Half with blow tweeters, bad rubber surrounds, and mish mash mixed matched pairs. I want 6-10 matched speakers. Thanks for the tips, keep them coming.

I'm sure the JBL's sound very nice and are perfect for a desk top with only 6.5" woofers, but now try and fill a 1200 square foot shop with those and I'd shred them in a minute. And especially at $500 a pair, x 3 or 4, Nah, I'm not looking at dropping $2000 for shop speakers.

Try these:

http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=BOSOWA

They're in your price range, sound very good, come in different colors, they're durable and best of all they don't say Bose on them anywhere.

Is the shop climate controlled? If not, may want to get something a bit resistant to temperature and humidity extremes, well more humidity in Washington I bet

Due to humidity considerations, I have Radio Shack "disposables" they sound OK for the garage and if they get mildew ~who cares.

Heh heh, Woofer and 4" speaker cone do not belong in the same sentance. Doods, I'm filling a several bays, two at 30' x 30', and a 34' x 36' high bay which are all wide open rooms with these new new speakers. No 4 " woofers need apply.

Yes its a sealed up shop. Let me run outside and take some pictures for you all......THANKS For the suggestions, but I'm wanting full sized speakers 10" minimum woofer that can put out some thump. I live on 5 acres with the neighbors 400 feet away. YES I rock the joint.

For scale, thats a long bed full sized lifted pickup parked in front of my 14' x 14' high bay doors. I need real big speakers to fill the sound of my real big man cave.

I bought the MTX speakers for my shop and they were crap. Luckily I've been holding onto an old pair of Bose 301 speakers I bought almost 25 years ago. The woofer rubber rotted away, but now someone sells repair kits for them. For a few bucks I got them working again without having to buy new Bose woofers for $75 each.

Being the sound man for my sons band I learned about pa systems. He had huge Carvin mains but Behringer monitors. They have 15 inch woofers and a horn. The only thing we learned was not to have the volume up on the mixer when powered up because it would blow the woofer on that first spike. Not good. We actually blew up so many over the years with different yahoos powering the system up with 10+ things plugged in the mixer we ended putting some re-coned carvin woofers in. Problem over. But were're talking 4k watt surges so I don't think you'll have the problem we did.

thanks all for your tips. I'm definately leaning towards "Cheap" pro sound gear.....

choices choices, lots of choices.........so, where are so of the best deals to be had, these guys have free shipping on most gear, plus some "buy one get one free speaker deals"

Gemsound seems to be some decent gear by the numbers.

http://www.audiogon.com/

This site is a great place to shop for expensive (used) sound at decent prices. You want to stay away from Klipsch and other speakers that emphasize treble or horns. Garages aren't going to be acoustically balanced and a lot of sound is going to be bouncing off the walls and floor. If you stand in the center of the room and clap your hands, you don't want any echo.

I have a couple nice sized shelf-sized speakers in my garage and it sounds good for what I use it for.

www.avsforum.com is another site for general information on all aspects of home theatre and speaker reviews.

Edit: I just read where you're going for loud. If quality doesn't matter PA speakers or Klipsch horns will blow the roof off.
