Who has the oldest daily driver here?
 

I don't commute anymore, I work from home. When I need to go somewhere that requires good a/c, taking the wife with me or carrying more stuff than I can fit on the bike, I take my 330i. Otherwise, it sits and collects dust. My wife will begin commuting every day about 40 miles round trip for her new job and she has a 2006 Mini, which she likes, but doesn't love. I lust for another BMW 2002 and one would be a fraction of the cost of my 330i, which is coming off CPO warranty in August. I have a $389 a month payment on the 330i, which is no problem, but I could probably sell it for more than enough to pay off the note and pick up a 2002 for the remaining cash. So, for you guys who either have an old 911 or some other car for a daily driver, how do you like it? Do you have back up vehicles? FWIW, it's in the low 90's in Phoenix now and I don't have the a/c on in the house and am happy to drive with the windows down. The only way I see myself not being able to live with a 2002 is if I can't fit my rifles in it, as they barely fit in the other cars.

Come August I bet you'll rethink the need for AC. Are you set on a 2002? What about another e30?

Probably me...a '99 Ford Ranger with air that makes Ice cubes.

I've had quite a score of old vehicles as daily drivers. I sold my 68 chevy pickup in 2000 after driving it for a decade. Had 1.7 million (yeah baby, MILLION) miles on the clock. Manual steering, no power windows, 4 speed, kind of a beast but as reliable as the rising sun.

My oldest current owned daily driver is our 81 911 coupe (Butters). Just got this car on the road in February. I drive it every day and use it for business trips as well - 1,000 miles plus on each trip. Very reliable little car.

The only downside to Butters is that I haven't gotten the a/c running. The weather here tweeked out yesterday and hit 98 plus a solid 100 or so today. Think I'll do a little work on that a/c system... Such as it is on an older 911!

I would not think twice about unloading the 330. Once you wash yourself of that, take your pick.

I drive the 83 listed below daily, and it carries rifles, coolers, clothes, etc... to the lease.

a 2002 with no AC in Phoenix? Doesn't seem like a great plan unless you like being miserable hot. Plus you can't pick up a decent 2002 for cheap these days. Seems like passable drivers are minimum $5K, and it goes up from there.

Why not try to find a clean e30? I would think that would be a more livable car.

Right now, it would probably cost me $45 a day to drive that baby. Wouldn't break down, but burns too much petrol. God, I love Her.

So now it's the A3, which costs me around $400 a month in gas. I love her too, but I can't 'shake' the feel of Be-Boppin' around in the LC.

It's like waffles, beer and a BJ all rolled into one.:cool:

86 Jetta with 400k on it. i put water in it every day because the head gasket leaks. AC kicks ass on it, everything works, sunroof is fun, and a Smart Car beat me up a hill in it because it is automatic, lol. I find cheap 02s all day that run down here. My oldest DD was my 76 2002 now its my 89 Montero.

I had an E30 and loved it. But I like the feeling of looking at my garage and knowing no other cars call my name. I was at a Deutsche Marque car show about two years ago and there were a bunch of 2002's and 3.0 CS's. I stuck my head in the window of one of the 2002's and that smell instantly sent me back to my high school days when I had a '70 2002. It was such a rush. I really must own another and I don't drive much at all anymore.

My DD's are 1965 & 1966 Monza coupes. I doubt if they're the oldest dd's here, but I like them. Every now & then I'll drive the '66 Corsa.SmileWavy

I think those are pre-seat belts, arent they? Lap belts just help with id after an accident anyway. My dad had a 67 corsa he ran on Mullhuland back in the day, cool car.

I see a guy every day. I go North, he goes South in the AM.

He drives a 356B - every day. Even in the rain. Paint's sort of a matte silver.

I use to use my 1950 Chevy 3100 as my DD, currently using my 88 Carrera, but plan on putting my 76 914 back in service:D as the 4 banger should be easier on gas:D

1984 Mercedes 500SEC, lots of power 17-20mpg, air blows cold, passes smog, timeless body style.

91 Maxima, original owner, 230k, original clutch though she is just starting to give me a little shudder in reverse, still a solid 25mpg day in day out. Its been a great car but, I will probably go to a newer vehicle at 250k for reliability reasons. Its going to hurt with the difference in having increased registration costs and increased insurance premiums. I've been spoiled for almost 10 years now.

The wife and kids always got the new cars. Not next time though.;)

I think the 3.0 CS and 3.0CSL are amazing looking cars.

My newest is a 2001 Chevy truck. I just parked it after the first $100 fill-up and got the 1987 944S out of storage. I bought it for a race car project, but it makes a great DD. Almost 30 mpg on the highway, lots of cargo room, great handling, comfy, daughter fits fine in the back seats, yada yada....

The '83 Westy gets driven the most.

Everyday I see a guy in a 1940's American car with a bike on the bike rack.

i drove my 86 911 for 3 years from 03-06 on my sales job...3-4K miles per month...it was great, fun, tax deductible and a conversation piece... but damn it was hot inside. now i drive the 97 993 daily. much cooler car inside.

I recently bought a 95 Honda to drive back and forth to work when diesel went to $4.35 a gallon. up till then, I drove my 62 Olds when I wasn't in my truck. the newest vehicle I own is a 96.. the oldest a 37. and a bunch more between 57 to 90

My Daily Driver....right here....Datsun 280Z...terrible interior, horrible aesthetics but amazing mechanicals, good ride and handler...

My 1971 911E is my daily driver. The lack of a functioning A/C can be brutal on those hot summer days. The 12mpg in the city (23mpg on the highway) is starting to be more noticeable.

I've thought about getting a second car and relegating my 911E to "weekend car" status, but I feel like that would be putting this great old car out to pasture. He deserves to be driven regularly.

e30's are nice - but they run R12 so the AC repairs are quite costly. The money to do a proper R134 conversion is not worth it, and the cooling suffers. In Phoenix I would not contemplate not having a car that didn't have AC that could lower the cabin temperature. By that I mean some older cars AC will keep a car cool. But if you park it under the Arizona sun, they can't reduce cabin temperature...

Hey Joe....where are you on this thread and your '71 BMW Toaster? Then again, I guess your daily driver is a business jet :D

I drive my 2000 Tacoma...just gave my '90 Toyota truck to my best buddies 16 year-old son. The '90 has over 250K on it with zero problems.

They don't win drag races, but the a/c blows frigid, they haul all the guns and never break.

I love 2002s, btw. I had a Tii in High School. Me? I'd get a Toyota truck and then look for a 2002 to drive in the 8 months when the Southwest furnace is on low. Also, think off road in the places you went with your bike...take the wife:cool:

Just went shooting out in the desert today and it was about 93 out. Getting back into the car was tough and the 330i has excellent a/c. Dunno if I can handle anything less now. It should be 101 deg. tomorrow.

For four years it's been my '87 924S, but my dad is buying it because his is an '03 4x4 Suburban and he wants to save on gas while still driving something fun. It's a reliable car though... always gave me some kind of warning that something was amiss so I wouldn't be stranded anywhere.

Seriously, youo need A/C and you want something post mid 90's so it has a decent R-134a system. It's a daily driver. Buy a friggen Honda.

a good 944 with one of those kuehl ac conversion could be the ticket...
i've drove my 944 daily, 10 000 km a year, no problems

got company car now, since i changed jobs, do 100 miles a day, close to 20K a year.. so the 944S get's RS'ified now... or rather, eventually will be come a rally car, when i get around to it...

My 944 is my daily driver, and the Saab is the DD for my SO.
I've driven all sorts of things over the years; old Lancia Betas, Alfa Milanos and 164s. I draw the line at fuel injection, three point belts and working A/C. I just can't hack carburetors every day, especially here at altitude.

My current daily driver is a 1970 Beetle. The newest car I have ever owned is my '72 911T. I buy new cars for my wife (she currently drives an '06 Outback) but much prefer the older cars for my own use.

My DD is an old Honda Accord. Hard to beat the old Accord and its really a pick up truck with a roof on the back.

I ran my last E30 as my DD and during the summer I bought one of those cheap "AC recharge" kits. It included some leak sealer and the refrigerant . The "fix" didnt last through the whole summer but I added another $7 can of refrigerant and all was good. The AC was very cold and had no problem bringing the temperature down after sitting in a hot parking lot. My wife and I put about 50,000Km on it in a year and sold it at around 330,000km. It was my second e30 and I wouldnt hesitate to get another and drive it daily.
