craap hitting the fan in mexico...

damn, my brother is a cop in el paso. looks like the bad guys are not playing nice. he has escorted several ex-cops from mexico to U.S. hospitals after having their motorcades gunned down. it is like the wild west. he gets boo-coo OT being SWAT, but this is getting ridiculous. this messed up our annual trip to mexico lobster fest. and that piisses me off.

my bro said diesel is $2.00 over the border, but he cant get to it.

I lived in "the Pass" years ago and its not changed. Far too much drug activity going on there and the bad guys have no fear of LE.

Its not a good place to be and I refuse to go to border towns these days. Mexico is a nice place in most areas once you are 100 klicks South of the border.

We tried to tell em.
We said, Mexico, do something about the drugs. Stop the flow of drugs through your country. We asked nice, we gave em lots O'money, we sent them help.
But no .... they make money off em so they did very little. Besides, it wasn't hurting them, the bad guys were way down in Columbia and the drugs were just passing through so as long as they got their cut is was our problem, not theirs.
Now Mexico has to sleep in the same nest they ***** in. They waited too long, the bad guys got a foot-hold and moved north, now they are in a drug war on their own turf. And the bad guys don't play nice.
Remeber Panama? There was a reason we kicked butt there, to help slow down this crap. That was until Clinton turned his back on the problem, as long as he didn't inhale, right?

BTW, we are next. As long as our borders are a joke, they get closer. If we don't lock things down and start really enforcing the existing laws, they will be doing the same thing on our streets. You think all the illegals are good, decent hard working people who just want to come here and live off our system for free and send the money back home? Not all of em. Some of em are real bad people. Real bad.

But that's OK as long as we are sympathetic to the illegals. we don't want to offend anyone or be cruel. We'll just have to blame it on someone else when El Capone and Senior scarface are killing our brave cops and anyone else within shooting distance.

You mean the 3rd world isn't perfectly safe?

Surely some pelican who has motorcycled that whole border route with the US in the company of his 80yo Grandma, and had a 'lovely time' can stop in to post how we're hate mongering bigots for speaking ill of a lovely 3rd world tourist attraction.

LOL.

Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Mexico= not for me.

hey sniper, you can take this thread anywhere you want. i dont care. i only feel sad because mexico is one of my favorite places. folks are nice, beaches are great, and lobsters are relatively cheap. (and the bass fishing is world class)

secondly, i am always aware that my brother's job got significantly more dangerous. the drug cartels are out of hand.

I stopped driving across the border 15+ years ago. Way too dangerous and for what...saving $5 on a lobster dinner. Driving to Ensenada does not improve things much. You need to get much further south...

Now flying across the border to places like Cabo, Puerto V, etc... that I have done and will do again. Wonderful people and places.

We're probably going to be filming a large part of "Dawn Treader", the 3rd in the Narnia series at the former Fox Baja tank in Rosarita Beach. The road down there is way different than it was when Titanic and Master and Commander were shot there. I have some serious safety/security concerns for the crew.

sorta smelly with all those dead bodies laying around.

Hugh, you will need some security people on that trip, will probably have to hire Mexican Naitonals or Federales, you get caught carrying a piece in Mexico, you get locked up.

I would not go to a Mexican border town anymore, not at night anyway

Spent a week in Baja over xmas. Was awesome. Have friends who live there part or all of the year. Just like this country, depends on location and the details.

Some of you guys use really broad brushes. I guess that makes it easier...

Todd, Hugh is talking about driving down there with a bunch of guys and a ton of equipment that many folks would be happy to kill you and all your friends, so they could take it off your hands.

Like you say, location is everything. Farther you get from the US border, the better off you are. It is sort of like a town with a military base, did you ever notice the bases tend to be in crappy parts of town? I can't think of too many that are not, I don't know why there is a connection, but for my purposes, it is enough to know that there is a connection.

We're taking a helicopter down this Thursday with our Head of Security, to meet with the Governor of BC, the military, and state and local police chiefs to discuss these exact issues. We're taking a helicopter because it's safer than driving. Our concern is exactly what Tobra said, lots of people and very expensive vehicles and film equipment.

Hope it all goes smooth Hugh. You don't need a replay of "Miami Vice" when Jamie Foxx fled the Dom. Republic.

What Craigster is referring to is things like armed men holding up a van or bus full of crew members robbing them of everything and the drivers saying they got off very lucky; they didn't execute them as well. Happened a number of times on Miami Vice, fortunately not one of my shows (Universal).

I know there are issues with tourist getting car jacked, but my understanding was that it primarily happens at night. I'd agree that Hugh is in a different situation, and I wasn't speaking to his travels, but more towards Mexico (and other countries) in general. No place is totally "safe" and you need to know the scoop. My only point was that not all of baja is 24/7 danger...

I don't even like driving through the streets of Richmond, Vallejo, Oakland, etc.
