Trip to San Diego

Possibly heading to southern CA for work and extending it into a vacation. Any spots in the San Diego/so Cal area that would be fun. We like scenic road trips and don't like crowds! We're looking for small town interesting places and outdoor views. Any suggestions?

will you have the '87 with you?

otherwise SC if full of lousy looking high desert. The S West has some great desert drives but all require a few hrs to get there.

How about getting into some offshore fishing or free diving? The border area and across is trophy quality action.

Coronado, over the Bridge is cool, have a meal at the Hotel Del Mar.

Point Loma is a great place to see the City and Bay from a High Point, I enjoyed watching Ships coming into the Harbor and the Jets flying into the Naval Base.

If you go East on the I 8 there is a series of Switchbacks that drop you down to the Desert Floor, there's a Restaurant with a great view of the Desert Below. It's about an hour outside the city I think.

Maybe a drive up to the Palomar Observatory.

Above La Jolla, Torrey Pines is where UCSD and the Golf Course is, on a bluff overlooking the Ocean. They have a glider port there where hang gliders hang forever off the ocean updrafts there. Then you can take the Coast Highway from there North thru some Calif. Beach towns to Oceanside, and if you go farther North to Laguna and Newport Beach. All interesting places if you ask me.

If you like roadtrips, fly to Phoenix or Tucson and then drive to San Diego. I-8 past El Centro to San Diego is breathtaking gorgeous. I rode the bike last time and took back roads along the fence to Mexico.

Go eat at Pancho's in Pacific Beach, a dive, but good. Go walk through the caves to the beach at La Jolla, go watch the seals on the beach just around the corner. Go watch the jets take off at Miramar.

Scripps Aquarium in La Jolla is nice with incredible views. Below the glider port in LJ is Black's Beach where you can frolic in the surf nekkid . . . with men. There are more women on weekends. I know this because I run through this beach from time to time . . . clothed . . . really.

For a good hike with great views, Torrey Pines State Reserve is fun. It's in La Jolla just south of Del Mar. This is where the Torrey Pines golf course is that hardflex mentioned.

Also Balboa Park has much to see; museums, the planetarium and the Zoo is there too.

North up the 15 freeway is Temecula, which has some surprisingly good wineries.

FYI.

Best,

Anthony's seafood is one of the best in San Diego. Right on the water, they are known around the world.

Thanks for the great ideas - wondering if I-8 is safe or will we be caught in a crossfire between the cartels and immigration?

You won't be too close to any official border crossings on I-8. There are a few turnoffs to go there, but they're way, way out in the desert. It's pretty interesting to see and you'll have a new appreciation for how hard the Border Patrol works and how huge their task is.

No P-car on this trip, We would only have a few days to explore in a rental car.
