Mercon 3 and Antifreeze mix up HELP!!!!
We accidently put antifreeze into the hydraulic fan resovoir....yes we know we are dumb asses...but please help? What will this do? Should we figure out how to drain it all or will it mix???? We put about 1 cup in to top off the tank.
This was in a Lincoln Thanks mg |
I don't know what vehicle, but yeah, antifreeze will certainly eff up a hydraulic system, very fast too, I might add. I'd go for a drain and flush. The water went to the bottom of the reservoir and if there are gravity feed lines from the reservoir, it just slid to the bottom of those lines (oil floats on water remember).

Thanks Hugh...
So why would Lincoln put their antifreeze fill by the cowl ? And the hydraulic fill where most cars have the radiator fill? Just trying to blame them for my stupidity!!!!! :( mg |

Exactly! I have been driving this car for 13 years and found out the difference today. I pray that my Brother can fix this without too much trouble or $$$. I feel so stupid. I know this post is old. But did you have luck with flushing/draining the system?

The system will have to clean throughly. The glycol will lead to severe oxidation and deposit formation when the oil gets hot and it will. The water is also a bad player as well. You can either pull the whole thing apart and clean everything with a safe solvent, parts washer solution, or a non-water cleaning fluid. I have heard of some folks flushing the system completely with a mineral oil around the same viscosity.
