Topo Maps

Where can I get topographic maps for free?

I notice there are a number of private companies you can BUY maps from. I also notice that my tax dollars already paid for the creation of those maps (USGS). So why do I have to pay again? Where is my (public) data?

The data is free but you gotta pay somebody to print the data on the paper.

And for hiking and backpacking, I prefer to buy the topo map. The paper is somewhat waterproof and tearproof. Otherwise, that's a good link Moses.

I went on Ebay and bought a DVD with all the topo maps on it for the whole country. Very nice and was only about $30 or so.

Google will show topo info, and my Florida Atlas by Delorme (they have many other states as well, not sure about all 50) has topo data in it also. Not so useful in Florida, but...
