It took roughly a year for the US to get from Normandy to Berlin. In about that span of time the Soviet states went from Warsaw Pact to free as soon as the wall started falling. That's what I was talking about.
I am not defending FDR at Yalta. He was a tired, sick old man who gave away the store to Stalin. But to suggest that the US could have faced off the Soviet Union over Eastern Europe is to be ignorant of history. Where the lines were drawn, yes, that would have made a difference and might have shortened the Cold War. Containment combined with Reagan's roll back was the right response to the Soviet Union after WWII.
