Please critique my friend's voice-over demo...

Let me know what you think...

I think it's great! Sounds fine. Every once in a while, the emPHASIS or the "direction" of the sentences gets a tiny bit screwy, but overall I think it's great. A good talent buyer is looking for the voice, anyway, and knows the director will help get the emPHASIS right.

He has a good tone, but if I were doing it, I would slow it down just a beat to be more in with the music... it should "play" and "dance" within the music... and imo, in all of these cases he is just a nip too fast and a nip out of synch.

The avg. person wouldnt care about this (and i have heard much worse on the air),...and this is just my preference, to give more life to the voice over vs. the backing track...learn the beats and use them.

other than that, his tone is good, EQ is good etc. His Irish bit isnt very convicing..but overall pretty good.

Very good. The oatmeal spot was funny. Has he considered animation studios? There might be a run on superhero cartoons because of Ironman and the new Hulk movie.

It's a pretty good demo for a voice talent. My clients have a very short attention span, however. So I'd probably tighten it up a bit. The first spot, in particular, seemed a little long. And I might put all the character voices together. Most of the time a producer is either looking for a character or a specific voice and that would make it more convenient for him/her.

Overall, though, it's fine. Good voice and good reads. If he has an ISDN studio, I might be able to get him some work.

Ohh, I'll send you some spots I've done. Would like to do some more. I need an agent is the issue. Life just gets in the way of my self promotion.

I think he's putting together a character demo. I don't know if he has access to an ISDN studio... um... what exactly is an ISDN studio???

It's a setup that will allow him to do his voice over at home, in (practically) real time, and not have to go to a studio down the street; or rather, across the country, to stand in front of the mic. Great for voice-over stuff. Or the Sinatra "Duets" CD!

ISDN, Integrated Services Digital Network

One of the earlier forms of "Broadband"

Two 64k pipes that can be combined for 128k.

Clean digital signal so you can pass voice over it without quality loss or analog noise concerns.

That's cool. I'd love to try that too, but I am not sure how my voice sounds. Anyone have a script for that stuff? I could record it to my PC and see how it sounds. LOL

Sorry, I'm not an agent. We do keep demos on file for our clients, though. If you have one, and I think it's appropriate, I'll give it to a producer to audition. But it's a tough business!

I'd cut the length in half and just take the ones with the most variance. I found that some of them had his "feel" too close to the other one. For instance the third spot, which was calm/quiet, could have used a little more "breathless" on it.

for grins, me circa 1981 (age 20, and coked out of my mind)

I suddenly have an urge to go to Best Buy in my Dakota and look for Maps of the Seaside where I can eat some Oatmeal and Breyers Ice Cream, then go trade my Dakota for a Suzuki then ship it to Britain.

I am not an expert so from a off the street point of view he sounds like a pro.
