The short version is that the Kennedeys were notorious for massive parties and using the State Patrol to make their beer runs. Mary Jo Kopechne was an attractive young secretary who had been a staffer for Bobby in some small capacity. She was at a particular party that went way into the night when she wanted to go home. Teddy had been drinking heavily but he volunteered to take her home. On the way home his car went off the road, hit a bridge and went into the water at a high rate of speed. The circumstances strongly suggested Ted was driving under the influence.

Ted got out, in circumstances that have never been satisfactorly explained, and literally walked home. There is evidence that he was kept out of sight long enough to sober up.

The next morning the wreck was clearly visible from the road. Mary Joe's body was in the back, kneeling on the back seat with her head in an air bubble where she suffocatedb while waiting to be rescued.

At that point Teddy went to the local authorities and reported the accident. He has told contradictory stories about what happened and how it was that he got inot the accident, he got out, she didn't and what he did between leaving the scene and turning himself in.

In all fairness the most reasonable explaination is that Teddy was drunk, drove off the road, and abandonded the wreck, hopong to cover it up, turning himself in only when it became apparent he couldn't cover it up and after he sobered up.

Except for the fact that Mary Jo was the one seen driving as they left the party...

Every woman should know NOT to get in a car with a Kennedy as they have a habit of getting killed or seriously injered.....RFK's son Joe had an accident where a girl was paralyzed and the family paid off..Mary Jo's family was similarily paid off.

Kennedys just don't think the laws of physics applys to them...

After John's plane crash I had a couple of lefties mad at me for pointing out that "you could tell this was a new generation of Kennedy's. The older generations killed their women one at a time."

Sorry to say it but the accident with John John was a combination of his arrogance and being stupid. His flight instructor offered to fly with him that night but he declined. The conditions were beyond his skill level and he crashed, taking the two ladies with him.

So sad because it did not need to happen and those last minutes in the descent to the ocean had to be tough...

Why are you sorry to say something that is true Joe? You did not tell John John to do what he did.
