Eeeewww!!!

I was watching the tube and they said that something like 20% of the population has Herpes. I thought that had to be an overstatement! I guess not!

I guess Paris Hilton isn't alone in taking Valtrex!

Medline Plus Health Information, 2006.
  • While statistics vary, research shows that 90% of the population has been exposed to HSV-1, "oral herpes", and 25% of the population aged 25-45 years old in the United States has been exposed to infection with HSV-2, "genital herpes".
  • Americans aged 14 to 49 who tested positive for herpes 2 infection fell by a relative rate of 19 percent between 1988 and 2004.

  • People with herpes simplex virus type 1 also decreased -- from 62 percent in 1988-1994 to 57.7 percent in 1999-2004, a relative decline of 6.9 percent.
  • Both forms of herpes still affect millions of people in the United States. Overall, the prevalence is 17 percent -- that means one in six Americans are still infected with this virus.
  • HSV-1 is causing more genital herpes than ever before. About 2% of people with HSV-1 infection -- but not HSV-2 -- have genital herpes.

For once, I'm glad not to be inside the top 5-10% of something!!!

And it will only get worse as this has no cure. I did counciling for many years while in college and afterwards and you have no idea how rampant this is.

This was 30 years ago and we were told then that if a person has had more than 8 sexual partners that they have been exposed to HSV2. Does not mean you have it but you have been exposed....

At least it does not kill ya... but sure does not sound like fun either.

Is it that hard to keep your d*ck in your pants or otherwise wrap it?

Cripes. You think people would learn. . .

Moses 05-25-2008 09:05 AM

That data is NOT EVEN CLOSE!

It's true that one in five people have HSV by history. But if you do serum analysis, the percentage is far greater. The majority of folks who have HSV II either do not get outbreaks or the outbreaks are subclinical, yet they harbor and shed the virus like any other HSV II host.

A local internationally regarded Infectious Disease specialist put the HSV II infection rate at well above 50%. My clinical experience corroborates that.

livi 05-25-2008 10:51 AM

What Moses said...and my personal experience corroborates that..

eeh,

Only about 20% of people infected with the herpes simplex virus are diagnosed.

that doesn't mean 20% of the population has it, it means that only 20% of those who have it, are diagnosed

From what I have read 'wrapping it' doesn't stop it from spreading. It could have been someone's first time and just plain bad luck. I know people who have it and I wouldn't consider them dirty people or whores. Like I said bad luck sometimes.

m21sniper 05-25-2008 11:22 AM

Hmm, can't say i've ever ran accross a chick with herpes (that i know of?).

I'm either lucky, or it's way less subtle a condition than i thought?

Mule 05-25-2008 11:44 AM

Read the first bullet point:

"Worldwide 1 in 7 to 1 in 5 people have been exposed to and infected by genital herpes simplex virus (HSV)."

So between 15-20% of the world is infected. Only 20% of those actually know that they have it. 3-4% of the world population is CONFIRMED to have herpes.

I repeat: Eeeewwww!!!!!

Wrap that Rascal indeed!

9dreizig 05-25-2008 12:48 PM

There's a huge poplulation that has been exposed, hence has the anti-virus but will never have simptoms.. I've heard that if you've had sex with more that 3 people in your life you've been exposed...

red-beard 05-25-2008 12:53 PM

According to the study, the number would be somewhere between 5-7, and you were probably exposed.

Jeff,

A lot of us on this forum were alive and kicking as well as being sexually active way back in the 1960's and 1970's, if not even earlier.

For me it was the years of flying rock n rollers. You simply cannot imagine the number of young ladies throwing themselves at anyone associated with the group, nor the number of times that they would do just about anything for a backstage pass.

Herpes was barely known then, and AIDS had not reared its ugly head by this time so very few people used a condom back then. The ladies were for the most part using the pill and there was no need to "cover it up" so to speak.

You may have grown up in the era of everyone using a condom but there are still a lot of us around these days who did not. Your comment "You think people would learn" comes from the generation before you teaching your generation BTW.

That's so absurd it's funny. MORE THAN HALF of the adult population is HSV positive and fully capable of infecting partners.

Here's another gem; Let's say your new partner has HSV but is VERY careful to avoid all sexual contact when they have an outbreak. There is STILL an 85% chance you will be infected within 6 months.

You never ran across a chick with herpes? Stop! You're KILLING ME! :D:D:D

Have to agree. Lets make it easy.

If you have had more than 6-8 sexual partners in your life, you HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO HSV2!
