One of the guys at my Memorial Day BBQ was a FAA guy. Very interesting discussions about this carrier. He at one time worked in that part of the country and had some exposure to the company. He would not tell us any details but suffice to say that Connie and the gang who run the place sure seem to spend more time getting around the rules than it would take to just do it right!

even I have heard of their reputation based here at a private airport from pilots that live part of the year in alaska.

PM declared quite loudly..."v1" after V1 heard loud bangs..(compressor stalls) PF decided to abort after V1... when conducting abort used only wheel brakes and no reverse.. spoilers were not deployed. wheel brakes dont work so well (at high speeds) without the spoilers deployed because some of the weight is off the wheels(lift produced by the wing). Im pretty sure the spoilers automatically deploy in an abort when thrust levers go into reverse ? abort after V1+ no reverse thrust+ no spoilers = good chance your going 4x4ing |
Nick, you are assuming all of that stuff actually works on a Kalitta Air airplane.;)

Its been years since I had any time in a "whale" but the bird I am flying now the spoilers are automatic on landing if they are armed and everything is working right. Believe that the -742 is the same but its not automatic on an abort. There is no connection with the TR's and spoilers that I know of. Totally independent systems.
We deploy them manually anyway just in case the auto system does not work so I would be really surprised if the PF did not get them out. If this situation above is true, and right now its not official... aborting after V1 is rarely done and even more rarely done successfully. You really need spoilers in any abort as it "glues" the plane down to the runway so you can get max braking and slow it down. Lets wait and see when we get more data from the powers that be... |

That makes sense ('cept for the spelling it backwards parts) I was thinking it stood for "F***ed Person", as in person responsible for the plane getting effed up, or the status of someones career after the crash.

That raises another question. What happens to a pilots marketability after an incident like this? Is he better off hangin up his hat or could he expect to still be employable with another airlines if he tried?

root cause , is still hardware you can applaud a pilot for saving the day if he does so but i don't think they can blame him for the failure to begin with, (unless off course he did something to trigger it, like i dunno , putting the throttle on idle instead of wot... but i assume this was a genuine hardware failure...) |
PF stands for pilot flying. Contrary to what a lot of people think the captain generally does not fly every leg. Who gets to fly is up to the captain's discretion, normally you swap legs or swap round trips between the captain and first officer. Of course the captain is always responsible for the airplane no matter who is flying. If the first officer (FO) is suffering from a case of rectal cranial inversion the captain might fly all of the legs.
