Anyone know Ducati's?

Just got a call from an old friend.

We have a friend who passed away 2 months ago and left a lot of toys. Lots of them no one can afford (a FW-190 Focke Wolfe fighter among others) but he had some toys that they are trying to find a new home for.

Top on the list is a 1999 Ducati Mark 4 motorcycle. No other info on it other than that, size, mileage or the like.

Anyone have an idea what this is or what its worth?

Joe

There is no Mark 4 that I know of. ST4?

Joeaksa 05-27-2008 08:51 PM

Wish I had more info but the guy who bought it has passed. I looked around for 1999 and there are several models but I do not know a thing about Duc's so thought I would post here.

Will try to get more info...

I'm too young to know Ducati history from first-hand knowledge, but I know they had a fairly successful line of Mark 3 bikes from the late 60s-early 70s. They were singles with displacements of 250/350/450 cc. Earlier versions were non-desmo, and later ones (3D models) had desmodromic valvetrain. Like Todd says, no Mark 4 from '99.

I'm not familiar with a "Mark 4" of late 90's vintage. Could it be an ST4 maybe? If so, it's a sport-touring bike that isn't anything super valuable (maybe $6k for a great example). The only "Mark 4" I can remember is the old 70's 450cc single cyl. Cafe racer (which would be much more valuable in good condition).

Maybe someone wrote down in sloppy handwriting "Monster" and it was later read as "Mark 4."

Mark 4, Monster also sound kind of the same.

'99 Monster would be the last of the carb'd ones, 2000 was injected.

If its a Monster 900, worth $3500-$4500 in average condition/miles?

nostatic 05-27-2008 09:19 PM

There also is a Monster S4, but that wasn't until 2001.

Hmmm. Let me try to get some more info.

Would hope that the 1999 was correct so that narrow's things down a bit.

Perhaps a pic would help.

Ok guys, got some more info.

Have been told that its a 1999 ST-4 model. Should have photos later on tonight.

Nice bikes. More HP than the ST2, yet still a good sport/tourer.

I'm looking around for a ST2, if you have more details post here or PM me, please.

cstreit 06-01-2008 06:48 PM

Not to hijack, but I have a full set of ST2 bodywork in red if anyone needs it.

Joeaksa 06-01-2008 07:24 PM

Are they good bikes and what are they worth?

This one may be for sale...

cstreit 06-01-2008 07:55 PM

The ST4 was a good bike from what I remember. Definitely a more comfortable ride than my 748... ...however if I was going to buy a sport-tourer I'd probably look at a BMW honestly. Ducati's are fast a beautiful, but the ST2/4 never really struck me...

They are all over the map. I've seen them list for ~4k-6k. I think 6k is nuts, butthey were $$ when new. There is a 99 ST2 near me for $3800 w/ bags and maintenance. I would expect a ST4 in similar shape to list for a little more.

I've read a lot about electrical problems and general 'Italian' issues. They arent Honda's. It seems they are like VWs or Audi's, you get a good one and love it, or you bought your last Duc.

Chris,

If you think that $6000 is nuts, then the probate atty who is doing this situation is round the bend!

He is saying that the motorcycle is valued at $14,000 and so far not willing to talk about anything less for the bike!

Here is a photo of the bike. Just received it last night.

Makes me wonder if the probate atty wants the bike!?

javadog 06-02-2008 05:58 AM

The attorney is an idiot and you may tell him I said so. Around 3 years ago there was a new '99 ST4 for sale. It had 2 miles on it, a full factory warranty and the dealer was asking $7995. A used ST4 with low miles can be had easily for $5-6k. With higher miles, they can be found under $4k. Better than an ST2. The 916 engine that they put in the ST4 is a nice one, although you may not like the clutch around town. I've had 2 916s and neither has had any problems at all.

Just get a 2000. You want a yellow one anyway...

On the surface it looks very nice. 14k? Yeah, that's a bit high :)
