Trattoria Contadina. (sp?) On Mason I think. Had an excellent meal there a while back. Old school. None of this silly fusion stuff.

per a friend who is a food writer in SF:

"southern italian I'd say Via Veneto on Fillmore and Clay. Kind of near Pacific Heights. SPQR, also on Fillmore is supposed to be pretty good. I've been to the one in Manhattan and it was wonderful. http://www.spqrsf.com/. Delfina on 18th in the mission is pretty good but it's packed every night."

She also avoids North Beach.

I'd rather go to New Eritrea in the Sunset though...but that isn't italian food

everybody. step back!

first off stay completely away from north beach. the entire hood is a tourist trap. great for cup of coffee, or to see some hotties...other than that keep your food money in you pocket.

a great restaurant, that is getting onto people's radar is PAZZIA. effen incredible. it is on 3rd street, near folsom. not super expensive, outside dining, hot hostess, decent enough wine list. i took two sets of friends there and they still talk about it. they make tiny pizzas also that are very venice like. light crispy...all the food is good. parking is a bit of a pain, but welcome to SF.

I live a block from SPQR and have had dinner they many times. It is one of my favorites. They do a lot of small plates. The fried Brussels sprouts are a big hit. There is also a lamb hamburger. The sausage is amazing also and they have a very good wine list. The downside is that they don't take reservations, and there is a line to fill the place at 430. It opens at 5. They do lunch also. It is very lively and a fun social scene.
Via Veneto is also very good but very formal feeling.

For something really off the beaten path, and if you want some quiet lunch or dinner with a beautiful back porch type feel, I'd try Sociale. They have duck meatballs to die for. Its is on Sacramento in an area called Presidio Heights. Also a very good wine list.

Stay away from North Beach. That is an order. It is kin to taking your daughter to see the Eiffel tower in....las vegas.

went to this place almost 10 years ago. glad to see it is still around. couple blocks south of Fisherman's Wharf. Caesar's is a really cool old school place. looks like a real mob family hangout form the old days.

we had a 4-5course meal and it was the bomb...tiera mi su is great too.

On the western end, Cliff house has an excellent menu, and a window seat at sunset makes for quite a view. Another(name?) opened between the windmills and has a second floor view of the beach.
The top of the Mark Hopkins has a nice view as well, but I only had coffee/desert there.
North beach/columbus has quite a few places, but you'll never find parking on a weekend even in the neighborhoods.

i stand by my choice. no reservations, you can drink wine while waiting. not that expensive, not all hoity toity like some of the other on the list. jardineire is great, but more french influenced..and high $$$

john, you are talking about beach chalet, right? no way. reminds me of a bennigans on the beach. sunsets are neat, but you have to endure the solar Blast up to that point.

Hey, is the Grant & Green still open? Man I haven't been there in years. I owe my marriage to Cafe Tivoli cross the street. Yummm, Cappuccinos.
