What to do with unwanted ammunition?

I found a box of .32 S&W Long in a old ammunition can that I just got back from my dads place. He was keeping some rifles and other items while I was serving in the Navy.
Anyways I have no idea where I got these rounds from since I never owned a .32 cal pistol before. How do you properly dispose of ammunition? I wouldn't think it would be safe to just through away in the trash. Police maybe?

Don't go to the police. Depending on how much you have, you can usually take it to a local gun range. All of them have cans for dummy or squib rounds. You might be able to dump it there. If it's not too many rounds you can just use pliers to pull them apart, dump or burn the powder and soak the brass and primers in water overnight. That's then safe for the trash.

Thanks Rick. I only have about 20 rounds or so. Believe me the police was only a last resort. I haven't been to a public range in years so didn't remember. I will try the range first before I try and take them apart. I need to go shooting anyways since its been awhile.

The obvious thing to do at this point is to start looking for a sweet old Smith in .32 Long.

Ha! I actually googles this before I posted a topic and thats pretty much what someone suggested someone else to do. He said to dig a hole using a fence post digger, drop a few hot coals, and then drop the rounds in one by one. That's when I quit reading and thought I would try here with you smart fellas.SmileWavy

Another great idea. Then I can dispose of them down range.
