...we're loaded up and truckin'

The family will be driving down to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida for vacation in June and I was wondering if there are any Porsche or car related things we should be checking out. Anything interesting that we can stop and look at for a few minutes. I intend to take pictures along the way. We will not be driving the Porsche although I would like to some day. I would like to say that we are going down to pick up a newly rebuilt 935 turbo motor to stuff into the 74 911 but I would be telling a fib.
We will be driving from Cincinnati. We should be taking I-71 down to Louisville and then I-65 through Kentucky, Tennessee and most of Alabama. I believe we will be staying the night in Montgomery. We'll then get onto SR-55 until we get to Florida. We'll end the trip on SR-85 to Ft. Walton Beach.

Thank you,
Chris

Cousin Vicki: I'm going steady, and I French kiss.

Audrey Griswold: So? Everybody does that.

Cousin Vicki: Yeah, but Daddy says I'm the best at it.

Chris, I drove my 911 from Detroit to West Palm Beach, FL last March and put 3600 miles on the car in 6 days. My favorite place was St. Augustine. Next time, I'll just drive there and spend my time eating soft shell crab and enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery! Take a can of Invisible glass to wipe the bugs off the windshield, it makes the trip more pleasant!

I didn't know I was starting a favorite "Vacation" quote thread. great movie.

Dueller, that's a great idea. Would love to visit the museum. I'll check out the link to see what they have.

Art, wish we were driving the 911 but I did drive it from San Diego back to Ohio after I bought it. That was great. I miss San Diego. Since you were one of the lucky winners I'm sure I'll see you at Porsches 2 Oxford in July.

Since you will be in the area. Take a drive east on 98 to highway 30A.

Spend an afternoon in Watercolor and Seaside - beautiful beaches and a chance to visit planned communities.

Chris, that's great. Ft. Walton Beach is my family's usual yearly vacation place. Where are you staying? We always stay at the same condo on Okaloosa Island. It's as close to paradise as I've seen. In the daylight, anyway.

I don't know of much Porsche stuff locally. There is an exotic used car dealer in town just off the miracle mile, but I forget exactly where. You'll see it if you drive the main roads there.

The best thing to do is go to the Air Force Armament Museum just off the highway next to the air force base. You don't actually have to go on the base to get to the museum. They have every kind of armament you can imagine and most of the planes that used them on display. The food isn't much to write home about, but there are a few good places that don't charge an arm and a leg. The best thing to do is to go to the seafood market just before the Mary Ester Bridge in Ft. Walton Beach and get the fresh stuff and cook it yourself. Don't bother with the market in Destin. It's a lot fancier but more expensive and a long drive.

Another thing to do is go to the outlet mall some day when it's raining or you're just looking for a break mid week. It's a great outlet mall with good brand names. The mall is on the way to Destin. You'll see it on the left as you come to it.

Otherwise, stay on the beach and take in the sun. If you want more ideas I can give them to you. We've practically become locals.

Dueller,
I checked out the link and their website. That place is a work of art.

Randy,
Where is Watercolor and Seaside?

MRM,
Thanks for the ideas. I will definitely check out the seafood market. That's my favorite kind of food. I think the condo we are staying is called Azure. It's on Santa Rosa Blvd. if that helps. This will be our first year in Ft. Walton Beach. Last year we were in Tallahassee and Destin visiting friends that live there.

Thanks again,
Chris

Head east on hwy 98 thru Destin and Sandestin to hwy 395 south. 395 will end at hwy 30A. Go east on hwy 30A a few blocks and you're there. You'll definitely know it - beautiful place. The movie the Truman Show with Jim Carrey was filmed in Watercolor and Seaside, FL.

Sure, I know the Azure. It's on the same row of condos on the Island as the one we stay at. We've stayed at Pelican Isle since it was new. Pelican is farther down from Azure. It's really easy to find once you hit town. Just go over the bridge and it's the first right, right at the foot of the bridge. They're all on Okaloosa Island. Get up early in the morning and walk the beach. At one end of the beach there is a huge fishing pier. At the other end is what used to be a radar installation for the Air Force. There's a big nasty sign saying not to go past the sign without permission of the air base commander, right by the well-worn footpath of people walking past the sign. No one really cares, and the AF portion is completely pristine and undeveloped. I've been sitting well into the "restricted" area, sipping my morning coffee, reading the paper and watching the sun rise when the sheriff drove by in the little 4 wheelers they use down there. He hardly gave me a second look.

Don't buy any beach toys on the beach or at the clip joints near the bridge. Go just in town to the K Mart and everything is regular priced. Stock up on boogy boards, noodles, etc. and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. Rent a beach umbrella on your first day for the whole week. It's a little cheaper than doing it by the day and they're really worth the exorbinate fee.

Another tip is that if the seafood place is closed you can usually get some good stuff at one of the two supermarkets in town. I can't remember their names, but one is more expensive than the other. Do NOT shop at the cheap one. The more expensive one usually has decent fresh fish, but not nearly as good as the seafood market. Get your groceries at the store, your seafood at the market, and you're set for pretty much all your meals except for the ones you do in town just because you want to go out. The better one is the one claser to the bridge, if I remember right.

You can't tell I'm jealous, can you? We went last year but we won't be able to go this year. Unless I push a little. Hmmmm.....
