Vista guys, remove google desktop?

It seems like bloatware to me. Should/how do I remove it correctly?

slodave 06-04-2008 05:18 PM

1. Click the Windows Start button and click Control Panel.
2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
3. Right-click the entry for Google Desktop and then click Uninstall.
4. If prompted, provide Windows permission to continue.
5. (Optional) If you're certain you won't want to use Google Desktop in the future, click to clear the Keep index in case I want to install Google Desktop again later checkbox.
6. Click Yes to begin the uninstall process.

Invoice is in the mail...

Not sure how to remove. Always avoided 3rd party browser bars. They are exactly what you think they are, bloatware. And watch out if you get two diff ones installed. They can wreak havoc on each other.

This isn't a toolbar it's a live desktop widget.

Thanks, can you think of a reason I might want to keep it?

None. Get rid of it.

lendaddy 06-04-2008 05:32 PM

That's what I thought, thanks.

Len, download & run, Malwarebytes, Combofix & CCleaner. Your machine will purr with happiness. All are FREE!

Racerbvd 06-04-2008 06:42 PM

Mule, do you have a direct link??

Joeaksa 06-04-2008 08:55 PM

Byron,

Go to www.download.com and put each in the search window. They come right up...

Joe

Edit, could not find the combofix anywhere... other two came right up.

1. Aquire XP Installation disc and drivers for your computer
2. Reformat hard drive and install (1) above :p

Personally, I would keep the Google and ditch Vista. I've used my wife's new Vista -Powered laptop and now I know why Steve Jobs LOVES Vista!

lendaddy 06-05-2008 04:51 AM

So far I like Vista. The machine is definitely quicker without the Google crap as well.

We'll see in a few weeks if I learn to hate it but so far I like it a lot.

Here ya is:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

If those 3 utils don't fix what's ailin' your puter, nothing will. I had an old machine running 2000 that had multiple issues. Yesterday I needed something off of it & fired it up. I said "I wonder?" Ran combo fix first. CCleaner second. CCleaner only found 408 registry issues. Box is like new!

Mule 06-05-2008 05:16 AM

IMHO, the combo of the pay version of Malwarebytes & the free version of Avast Anti-Virus offer near bulletproof protection that you never even notice is running.

What does it do exactly? Can you give me an example? I didn't spend any time with it and have no idea.
