Must....resist......

That'll buff right out.

...darn!

stomachmonkey 06-05-2008 09:21 AM

Why would anyone want it.

That will definitely NOT buff out.

masraum 06-05-2008 09:22 AM

looks like it got wrapped around a telephone pole. At the very top you can see the circular "dent" where it was wrapped. I suspect it was moving pretty quick, and may have hit other stuff before it hit the telephone pole. My guess is that the jaws of life were used and so it's probably been opened like a tin can as well.

kstar 06-05-2008 09:22 AM

It may have artistic value.

You could tie a skinny dog to it.

Neilk 06-05-2008 09:30 AM

Can someone run a carfax for me...?

kang 06-05-2008 09:43 AM

Is that the chassis that someone crushed, deliberately, on a video? They drove the perfectly good car right into the crusher, got out, and turned the crusher on. They left video cameras running inside the car, to capture that perspective. I think someone posted a link to the video here, some time ago.

Is this chassis worth anything besides the value of the metal? E.g. melt it down and use the metal for something else?

onewhippedpuppy 06-05-2008 09:45 AM

Salvage title.......why?

Arizona_928 06-05-2008 09:48 AM

I saw that on eBay as well.

least it's a turbo...

Joke... actually wondering if they have a record of it?

onewhippedpuppy 06-05-2008 09:49 AM

There's a pic of the salvage title on the auction page, so yes there is a title. EZ Fixer!!!

As long as it has intact VIN tags and a title, someone will buy it.

Makes you wonder why. I mean, unless you have another car that's perfect but with an 'undesirable' VIN then what use would it be?

KaptKaos 06-05-2008 10:13 AM

My Dad's a TV repairman.....

MattKellett 06-05-2008 10:19 AM

...... and why the hell would you want to buy something that at least 1 person probably died in!!!!!!!

Your Dad's dressing habits don't have any place here. :D

JeremyD 06-05-2008 10:24 AM

This would be the reason why -

If you are a very skilled body man, you can acquire/obtain/(steal) another 996 and do the VIN switch from the mess on ebay to the stolen car...

If you do the job well enough, the DMV wont go out of their way to check the Hidden VINs...

If you get caught, you simply say "I bought it off of some guy" and give them the bill of sale and plead ignorance. If your occupation is not car related, they will have a tough time prosecuting...

And your only out the money that it cost to obtain the salvage VIN and of course your time to do the switch...

Haha

Yep. It's all about the VINs.
So if you have a stolen 996 you buy this junk, get the VINs suddenly your car is legit.
That car will fetch more than many people expect..

Aerkuld 06-06-2008 05:13 AM

Apart from the scrap value of the steel I can't think of a legitimate reason for this. I'm suprised that it is allowed to be sold in this way and that the VIN doesn't have to be removed/destroyed.

Might be worth a laugh to record that VIN, put it in a safe place, then wait a year or so and CARFAX it again... see where it turns up.

or feel free to re-contact me in a year or so and I will run it through CLETS for you.

Por_sha911 06-08-2008 02:46 PM

I really love the part in the ad where he writes: "Please email me if you need any other Porsche parts..."
OK, and I'm going to buy used parts from a guy that sells that thing?

If it does turn up in a year or so, I hope there is some FBI car-theft-ring investigation unit that looks into it.
