I betcha he would not have gotten the same attention if he wrote diabetes instead of 9/11. He probably would have received a much smaller portion of the attention he has garnered if he only climbed the building. It was an emotional grab in a message while performing an emotionally grabbing stunt. The things people have to do today to get in the news.

You'd think one of the police snipers would have been able to take him out before he got to the 5th floor. That'd be a justified shoot IMO.
