I hooked up my 30 year old Technics turntable last year just to listen to a couple old LP's I uncovered. Got mostly feedback. Messed with the grounds and stylus and decided it wasn't worth the effort. Old vinyl is just going to sound crappy anyway. I know there are purists that would argue....

I would argue!! I just bought a brand new Audio Technica turntable and have been listening to some old albums. Even my wife (pretty much a product of the digital music age) agrees that they sound wonderful. Definitely warmer and more musical than CDs.

I have some albums that are over 30 years old and they still sound great (but I've always been meticulous about caring for them).

The very nature of a needle riding on vinyl is one of erosion. Every time the needle touches that record, it is removing material. The very first time an LP is played, it performs at 100%. Every time after, there is performance loss.

Musical terms like warmer, could be muddy, might be muted. If you prefer bass to treble, then warm is good. Warm is easy to listen to, but not necessarily the way the artist intended it to sound.

To each his own, I like vinyl, but prefer digitized music now for consistency. CD's can have their own losses, but that is another topic.
