"Would you care to sign a petition?"
The doorbell rings. My wife answers the door. 90% of the time, it's a neighbor to see one of us. I don't hear the storm door open (either to let a neighbor in or my wife out), so I know we have some sort of solicitor at the door.
I come to the door to find some hippie college kid with a clipboard. He's trying to talk my wife into signing a petition asking our city council to pass a law mandating that all employers in town pay a "living wage". I stay silent. My wife doesn't. She explains to him how such a thing would increase unemployment, how it pays people for more than they produce, how it overpays high school students, how it causes inflation, how it discourages people from seeking better employment... And I just stand there and smile. ![]()

How do I know the kid was a hippie? Because it was like looking in a mirror of myself ten years ago...
Now I sign the petition for the Green Party candidates every time they come around. I disagree with just about everything that that party stands for, but I believe they absolutely have the right to be on the ballot. Unfortunately Illinois law is designed to place undue burdens on third parties. The requirements for signatures are much higher for "non-established parties". Also, anyone who signs a petition for one party's candidate(s) with have their votes discarded if they vote in another party's primary.

Sound a lot like Oregon...those in power setting up the petition regs in a manner to toss as many roadblocks in the path of the initiative process as possible. Evidently, those in power do NOT like "the right to petition the government for regress".
