Carbon dioxide eating bacterium
I just read this interview. Seems like pretty lofty stuff. Craig Venter's company is trying to create a genetically engineered bacterium that eats carbon dioxide, and poops fuel!

There's some folks trying to use algae to make diesel as well. They were planning to occupy a portion of the New Mexico desert with panels of algae (or maybe this is them?)

all plants eat carbon dioxide, and create fuel. Even if this guy gets plants to "poop' hydrocarbons (like, say C8H18 or similar) there is still the issue of thru-put.
