CA July 1st, must have handsfree cellular
So....hopefully this will get some of the asshats of the road and free up the wavey drivers in the fast lane....anyways.....I have the first generation Motorola ear thingy. I tossed it in a drawer a year ago because it sucked....but pulled it out and re-charged it recently.
Let me re-phrase....It would have to improve to just suck....it now likes to dial the last number everytime I pair it. I'm gonna give it the float test of the end of the Santa Barbara Pier before the PCA breakfast this morning Looking around and everyone seems to be raving about the Jawbone 2. Anyone BTDT? ![]()

I have the older Jawbone; it is an excellent product! I will probably get the new one because I have heard it can be easily used without an ear-hook.
Just take these off when you get out of the car! ![]() |

I had a Bluetooth Parrot installed in my car recently. It was matched to my phone, so everytime I get into the car, it automaticly connects to my cell. There is a small mike above the rear view mirror. It mutes the stereo when in use. Stores your phone book. Calls come through your car speakers......loud and clear. They had 3 models. I bought the one with the color screen for $249 plus labor.

Yeah....have that, in my cabriolet it's worthless with the top down. I also don't want to install that in my work vehicle.

I can see freeing up one more hand is an improvement, but isn't the lion's share of the problem in the looking at the phone and dialing it?

...or being distracted by the conversation itself, and not paying attention to changes in the flow of traffic?

Most of the traffic-related issues are due to the driver. Can't you guys in CA just ban drivers?

Everything I've read speaks highly of the Jawbone 2. I just bought one for the wife but haven't activated it yet.

it's just one more damn law.
bad drivers will be bad drivers. I have well over 500,000 miles since using a cell phone while driving, most one handed the sad thing is that the officer that is inforcing this law is working on a laptop, driving and talking on the radio and besides having his coffee in his lap, might just be on the cellphone himself. California needs to pass a VERY important law. It's the Jim Bremner bill. For every new law that is passed TWO must come off of the books.

This needs to be federal as well. In fact, I'd up the ratio a little more. Lamar Alexander famously said, "Tis better to repeal than to enact."

FWIW, NJ passed this law years ago and it's completely ignored. Ditto for DC. I think it should be a felony too get folks' attention and compliance. As a rider, I can't count how many times cell phone chatters have completely not seen me when making a turn in my right of way, forgetting to use a turn signal (should also be a felony), etc.

I bought my wife a Jawbone. --She likes it. It is one of the better ones out there. Tho', common to most all of these is that, they are Bluetooth. Bluetooth doesn't have much bandwidth. ...meaning, the sound quality suffers. Bluetooth is not horrible until someone starts talking fast. Of course with all headsets wind, and echoes (mic hears the ear-piece) are potential problems.

The worst part is the real problem is not that a hand is tied up holding a device, or even that one may look at a screen while dialing (ever tune your radio?), but that the part of the brain which is engaged in 'what if?' while you are driving is the same part which is engaged in an effort to make up the missing non-verbal information from the person with whom you are conversing.
Non verbal information can make up as much as 55% of the message received. Without seeing the person who is telling us something, part of our brain is busy. If the unexpected happens while we are otherwise occupied, reaction time is extended while the brain drops one task and picks up the other. That is when ***** happens. Hang up and drive safe. Les

Yep. The brain is deeper engaged while trying to decipher a poor quality signal/sound. --it's amazing just how bad cellular fidelity has become. But hey, cheaper minutes!

i like the nostatic law. If I'm riding and see someone drifting into my lane because they are yapping on the phone I can take a steel rod and smash one or more of their windows without penalty.
What I really want are paint balloons that when they impact leave a phone with red line through it pattern. Last edited by nostatic; 06-14-2008 at 09:13 AM.. |
