HEY NOW! i want this motorcycle!

just poking around, checking out what is new. work truck may go byebye due to gas prices. commuting will be on my own dime. traffic still sucks, the "huge-ness" if the 1150-1200GS has always been daunting. (my feet are not planted). lookie at thisee! BMW is putting this out! the F800GS!

800, just about right, at least for a rider my size. To bad for the big bore bikes, I wonder if they will lose some of their sales.

You can adjust seat height on a 1200GS. I was very intimidated the first time I sat on one, but it's an everyday ride for me now and quite comfy.

What do you like about the 599? I am looking at 6th Gen VFR 800s since they offer a good mix of sport and touring. They are on the heavy side though and most sellers overcharge, so I am have been contemplating the SV650 or similar "neutral" riding bike. I really would like something larger in displacement, but liter bikes are more spendy, of course.

Although not a hardcore biker, I've owned several Honda's (87 Shadow 1100, 94 Nighthawk 750, 82 Sabre 750)...and enjoyed every one. The only reason I am leaning toward this bike is due to how much it reminds me of my favorite one, a '91 Hawk GT that I owned pre-children. It's extemely difficult to find one of those now with low mileage. I have a good friend who wants to get rid of his 599 with 1200 miles on it, so it's a purchase due to timing and opportunity!

Went I was shopping for a re-entry bike I seriously considered first the 599 and then the 919. I found they were pretty expensive and light on quality hardware vs. the competition. If you're buying used then you might get a deal...

I don't find the 599 compelling at all. But to each their own.

Rotax is making the 800 twins for BMW for the F series. The F800S/ST guys aren't really a happy lot - a fair amount of teething pains with the platform. I think that BMW has held off on releasing the F800GS so that they could sell the F650GS bikes. Those can be had on the used market pretty cheap. New BMWs are pretty spendy, and a number of people complain about not really getting a premium quality bike for the money.

I do find this compelling though

I don't think I'll ever get another twin. Spit the difference with a triple. All the torque, all the sounds, more steam, no vibes. Got to get me one...

No vibration issues with the 750 v-twin at all. This is a different beast than the 1000cc Rotax lumps. Incredibly smooth fueling. There is a 1200cc version on the way as well. That thing will be sick. But the 750 has plenty of juice. I hope they make a touring variant although a used Futura or Caponard is more attractive for the $$$.

The other thing is that the Street Triple is a *very* small bike. No way I fit comfortably on that.

What kind of riding do you want to do?

I haven't been interested in a 599, but from what I recall, it often comes out on top in magazine comparos. It usually gets knocked for its price and lack of wind protection, which is fixable. This is a good resource:

Izzat the Ducati 800? I saw that in a parking garage...looks nice and compact w/o being ricey. Reminds me of the Moto Guzzi 850 Lemans in size and stance.

The F800GS is on my buy list, at least after they get here and a few used ones show up. I had 11 days with a new model F650GS (800cc also) that was near perfect for me. The 800GS has a few desireable features worth waiting for.

You cant go wrong with a VFR. Great commuter, tourer and fun on the weekends. It's the the best at any of the above, but it's hard to find a bike that does them all better. I've had mine for ~18 months. Great bike, but I still have a thing for a Duc.

I have a hard time rationalizing the premium you pay for a modern bmw. Great bikes now doubt, but you can get a great bike for half the price. Just depends what you need it to do.
