I have a Panasonic that is very good. I hear Dysons are the 911TT of vacuums.

I have a Panasonic too and have had good results. However if i were in the market for a new one I'd strongly consider a Dyson. Heres a thread on another forum on Dysons: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610064 thread has been around for about 4 years with 900+ posts.

I'd also consider one of the backpack type vacuums. They look a little funky, but apparently normal vacs mess up your back.

I have a dyson, excellent machine and customer service. Broke 3 parts by having it fall down the steps. Called dyson just to buy the parts, gave them the serial number and then the canister and other small parts were in the mail free of charge, I tried to keep saying it was my fault "how much".

It was the only vac that would cleanup after my German Shepherd and keep the rugs Deep down clean.

Love them worth every penny.

Customer service is the best.

CR like the sears progressive series. Not sure if it's the canister or upright. I have canister, 10 yrs old and its an a$$ kicker. Use HEPA cloth bags.

I have the Hoover Windtunnel 2. Rates better than the Dyson and a little cheaper. Works great.

Simplicity! Usually only sold through professional suppy companies. Fantastic construction, used by many in the cleaning industry. Compare them to anything else. Works better than anything I've ever owned, including older Kirbys.

We've covered this before in pretty good detail.

Miele. There is no substitute.

Never buy an upright, they are throw away vacuums.
Go to an Oreck store and get a canister. We have the Oreck XL, i think? Anyways it is the best vacuum I have ever had. Spent about a grand but damn it is perfect.
If I remember it came with a once a year free tune up and 5 or 10 year warranty.
It is the perfect vacuuming machine.
Dyson is all advertising. Dysons are noisy and messy.
With an Oreck canister you can hardly tell that it is on.

Absolutely right.

MIELE. The rest are just toys. (Based on countless vacuum cleaner purchases - and being married to a girl who used to be (past tense - sadly) one of the heirs to the Miele fortune.)

Another vote for Dyson. I bought mine relatively recently...maybe 6 months. It picks up near white Labrador hairs like a charm. Works great but honestly? Its pretty costly going in. Nevertheless, I would buy another in a heart beat...oh, and my model which is supposedly specially equipped forpets, came with an atachment that makes it easy to go under low furniture.

Oh, but I forgot, its JUST A TOY!

Sorry Dan. I meant no offense. But try a Miele. They really are the top shelf.

No offense taken; I'm just being a sm@rtass...'ya gotta go with your strengths!

Honestly, I've never heard of that brand but then again if its too premium to be sold at Home Depot I'm probably never going to see one. I'm sure it works great.

For pure suckage, nothing can beat a Kirby.

Bad...
They are bulky, they aren't convenient, they use bags and are sold generally by high pressure salesman for huge dollars.

Good...
They also have tech drive (1990+ G3-Sentria) which moves the vacuum with 2 lbs of pressure, you can buy them refurbished for 1/4 price of new, they use hepa bags to eliminate dust. They come with dozens of attachments, shampooer, sander, and other stuff. It will even blow up balloons or your childs pool. You control the height of the roller brush. IMHO, nothing will do a better job of cleaning carpets if you can tolerate the "bad".

And with all that Kirby is rated #1 by Consumer Reports on reliability.

Look at Nilfisk. I don't know if they still do residential stuff. We have had ours for over 15 years. Cleans up almost anything.

My wife wanted a Dyson, she told me to look at them and see what I thought.
I checked off, it's been fine for several years now.

Don't overpay. Seriously. I have checked CR and there are many including those mentioned that where outperformed by units cost 1/2 as much.
